keep in mind that i'm using the words "(in)valid" and "(un)sound" here in their formal logic senses: a valid argument is one where the conclusion follows from the premises. a sound argument both is valid AND has evidence to support the truth of its premises. even if an argument is logically valid, it's not sound if you can't support the truth of the premises; and even if you have evidence for the premises, an invalid argument won't be sound either.

the reason it's so important to stay away from conspiratorial language is twofold:

  • one, it's literally just not even useful because it's fundamentally bad logic,
  • and two, if you don't fill in a specific value for the actor, someone else is very likely to fill one in for you, and that's one of the easiest ways to radicalize someone. if you're already primed to look for a target for your blame, all that a malicious actor has to do is aim you at their favorite target.

and to be crystal clear: being radicalized is BAD. antisemitism—because let's be honest, it always ends up turning into antisemitism sooner or later—is BAD. we do not want these things. they are the tools of very dangerous people whom we do not want to be like or be around. therefore we must avoid giving those tools and the people who use them a foothold in our discourse. conspiratorial language can very easily become such a foothold; therefore, we ought to steer clear of it.

here’s a concrete example. in my local activist group, someone posted info about a pro palestine protest but couldn’t verify what group had organized it. someone in the group went on a rant about how “the zionists” had probably created it to trick protestors into going to a fake protest for some nefarious reason. when i bluntly asked who he meant by “the zionists” he couldn’t say. he had no idea who he meant. he was just using “the zionists” to mean “some nefarious group trying to trick us.” this same activist group eventually became so antisemitic that i had to leave because they over and over again refused to ask themselves these questions and ended up diving headfirst into straight up nazi conspiracy theories and horrific antisemitic rhetoric like “the zionists [again, couldn’t define “zionists”] wanted the holocaust to happen”

Customer started yelling at me because I was 1 minute late to open the shop so I banned him from shopping with us and locked the door on him. Play stupid games.

This man had the audacity to come back at the end of the day as I was closing up by the fucking way. Ranting and raving about how he had been mistreated and that no one had even bothered to reply to his complaint email all day

Well I had the UNBRIDLED joy of informing him that not only had I seen his email, which was insanely abusive towards me for the crime of being 1 minute late and not putting up with his shit first thing in the morning, but that I was also the manager who he demanded to speak to, and I’d now also had our IT team block his IP address from being able to contact us or order with us ever again.

I should’ve been allowed to castrate the man but this will have to do

Okay this got way more notes than I was expecting so I feel like I should add some important context here. I’m not management. I’m not even middle management I’m just some guy that works here. I don’t have the authority to do any of this I just like lying to customers

Love the argument "oh but if you transition you'll have to deal with being trans your whole life" because first of all there is nothing bad about being trans and second I'm still gonna be trans even if I don't medically transition I'll just be trans and miserable instead of trans and happy

Every time I hear someone say something like this I remember that one exerpt from that one book in which the author considers Gomez Addams as a trans man specifically because he has the energy of a guy who wakes up every day absolutely over the moon to discover that he gets to be a man with a family and a moustache and a wife who's taller than god yet again, and it becomes painfully apparent that people who say these things don't understand transness at all.

EDIT: I found it! Here it is!

An excerpt from the essay “Powerful T4T Energy in Steve Martin’s The Jerk” by Daniel M. Lavery, from his book Something That May Shock and Discredit You.

Absolutely amazing addition I love this and personally I can't wait to be proudly trans for the rest of my life!

despite what popular opinion may lead you to believe, some rocks actually do have scientifically-proven auras! Unfortunately, those rocks are uranium and the aura is cancer.

Though rock auras are rare, rock magic is common. The most common form of rock magic is Concussion.

Why do these all feel like footnotes from a Discworld novel?
