However, authorities have failed to cope with this problem in a consistently manner. This has led to the increase in non-collision injuries among commuters. This study aimed at investigating the prevalence and risk factors for non-collision injuries among commuters using public transport in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Methods A cross sectional study was conducted in Dar es Salaam involving 290 commuters from 7 bus routes travelling to and from the city centre using public transport which are privately owned and commonly known as “daladala”. Stratified random sampling was used to sample buses based on the passenger carrying capacity (i.e. 15-24, 25-34 and 35-45 passengers). Anopheles gambiae Giles s.l., An. funestus Giles s.l. and Culex quinquefasciatus Say were collected during three national surveys and two insecticide-treated net (ITN) studies in Tanzania. Knockdown effect and mortality were measured in standard WHO susceptibility tests and ball-frame bio-efficacy tests. Test results from 1999 to 2004 were compared to determine trends in resistance development. Anopheles gambiae s.l. and An. funestus s.l. were highly susceptible to permethrin (range 87-100%) and deltamethrin (consistently 100%) in WHO tests in 1999 and 2004, while Culex quinquefasciatus susceptibility to these pyrethroids was much lower (range 7-100% and 0-84% respectively). Efficacy of pyrethroid-treated nets was similarly high against An. gambiae s.l. and An. funestus s.l. (range 82-100%) while efficacy against Cx. quinquefasciatus was considerably lower (range 2-100%). In Tanzania several studies have been conducted on health effects of pesticides on agricultural workers. However, there are few studies on neurological health symptoms associated with pesticide exposure in flower and onion farms. Objective: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to assess health symptoms associated with pesticide exposure among flower and onion pesticide applicators in the Arusha region, Tanzania. Methods: Data on demographic variables and health symptoms associated with pesticide exposure were collected from 140 males who were employed in spraying pesticides on flower and onion farms in Arusha, Meru and Karatu districts between April and May 2017. The study participants were interviewed using a structured questionnaire with questions focusing sociodemographic characteristics, occupation, pesticide exposure, common type of pesticide used in the area and neurological symptoms experienced during and after pesticide spraying. To determine the intensity of pesticide exposure, acetylcholinesterase assay was done by using the Test-mate Model 400 device with a photometric sensor. Results: Ninety-five percent of pesticide applicators reported handling organophosphate pesticides. Body weakness was the most frequently reported neurological symptom (57.1%) followed by perspiration and headache (40.7%), poor appetite and depression (29.3%) and irritation (26.4%). About 27% of pesticide applicators had an acetylcholinesterase level below the limit value. Conclusion: A high proportion of neurological health symptoms and cholinesterase test depression was noted among pesticide applicators in both farms. There is a need to conduct further studies to ascertain causality for such high instances of neurological symptoms.

However, there have been many challenges in obtaining quality information on work-related injuries in the developing countries. This archival study based on the data from workers’ compensation registry from the year 2016 to 2019 aimed at determining trends and factors associated with work-related injuries (WRI). Data from 4578 WRI claims reported to Workers Compensation Fund (WCF) in Tanzania were analyzed. As expected, this new workers’ compensation system had increasing participation from inception in 2016 through 2019, resulting in increasing numbers of fatal and non-fatal work-related claims. Motor traffic accidents, machine faults and falls were the most reported causes of WRI. Males had more than 2-fold increased odds of sustaining fatal injuries compared to females. Commercialization of horticulture farming, expansion of farms, and the practice of monoculture fa... more Commercialization of horticulture farming, expansion of farms, and the practice of monoculture favor the proliferation of pests, which in turn increases the need for pesticides. Increased exposure to pesticides is associated with inadequate knowledge on the hazardous nature of pesticides, poor hygiene practices, lack of availability of washing facilities, and insufficient adherence to precautionary instructions on pesticide labels. Mitigating the risks posed by pesticides is considered a less compelling interest than alleviating poverty. Women working in horticulture in Tanzania usually have low levels of education and income and lack decision-making power even on matters relating to their own health. This contributes to pesticide exposure and other health challenges. Because of multiple factors, some of which act as study confounders, few studies on exposure to pesticides and health effects have been conducted among women. The Tanzania informal sector is growing fast, with precarious working conditions and particular h... more The Tanzania informal sector is growing fast, with precarious working conditions and particular hazards for women and children in agriculture. Hazardous agricultural chemicals including pesticides are mostly imported and have been used for many years. Despite the role played by pesticides in food security and vector control, these chemicals are responsible for acute and chronic illnesses among communities. The availability of obsolete persistent organic pesticides on the open market indicates existence of an inadequate regulatory system. People who get injured or ill in the agriculture sector in Tanzania receive health services in primary health care facilities where professionals have little or no knowledge of pesticides. We are presenting the pesticide health and safety challenges faced by small-scale farmers who fall in the informal sector. Achievements that have been made by the government and other players to reduce and prevent pesticide exposures and poisoning are also outlined.

As the economic activities grow and expand, occupational injuries and diseases are more likely to increase among workers in different sectors of economy such as agriculture, mining, transport, and manufacture. This may result in high occupational health and safety services demand, which might be difficult to meet by developing countries that are prioritizing economic expansion without regard to their impact on occupational health and safety. To describe the status of occupational health and safety in Tanzania and outline the challenges in provision of occupational health services under the state of an expanding economy. Tanzania's economy is growing steadily, with growth being driven by communications, transport, financial intermediation, construction, mining, agriculture, and manufacturing. Along with this growth, hazards emanating from work in all sectors of the economy have increased and varied. The workers exposed to these hazards suffer from illness and injuries and yet they are not provided with adequate occupational health services. Services are scanty and limited to a few enterprises that can afford it. Existing laws and regulations are not comprehensive enough to cover the entire population. Implementation of legislation is weak and does not protect the workers. Most Tanzanians are not covered by the occupational health and safety law and do not access occupational health services. Thus an occupational health and safety services strategy, backed by legislations and provided with the necessary resources (competent experts, financial and technological resources), is a necessity in Tanzania. The existing legal provisions require major modifications to meet international requirements and standards. OHS regulations and legislations need refocusing, revision, and strengthening to cover all working population. Capacities should be improved through training and research to enable enforcement. Finally the facilities and resources should be made available for OHS services to match with the growing economy.

Purpose: Despite the great nutritional relevance of fish consumption in human diet, nowadays, one... more Purpose: Despite the great nutritional relevance of fish consumption in human diet, nowadays, one of the main concerns of federal governmental authorities is heavy metal contamination. One possible cause of this contamination is the industrial activity. The consequences of human intoxication by metals can be severe, ranging from involuntary shaking to coma and even death. In this context, the aim of this study was to analyze metals concentration in fish species from São Francisco River (Brazil). Methods: The study was performed in São Francisco River (Minas Gerais State) in July, 2010. A viscera pool of gill, liver, kidneys and muscular samples were obtained from 21 fish species (Prochilodus vimboides, Brycon lundii, Rhinelepis aspera, Salminus brasiliensis and Piaractus mesopotamicus), all of which having lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium and zinc concentration measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry. Results: Our study revealed that cadmium was elevated in muscular samples of all fish species, surpassing the values permitted by Brazilian laws (1.0 ppm). In pool viscera, the highest values of cadmium concentration were found in Piaractus mesopotamicus (6.19 ppm). In pool viscera, the zinc concentration did not exceed the acceptable values (50 ppm). However, in Salminus brasiliensis presented the highest value (17.82 ppm), which probably happened since this is a predatory fish. It was concluded that the high cadmium concentration in fish from São Francisco River indicate a concerning risk not only to the environment, but to the population of this region, serving, thereby, as a warning in relation to the environmental pollution.
Concentrations of 36 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were measured in serum of 372 Itali... more Concentrations of 36 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were measured in serum of 372 Italian residents of general population living in Novafeltria, Pavia, and Milan. Total PCB level differed significantly between these sites (p < 0.0001) with median concentrations of 836.50, 1354.57, and 2062.08 pmol/g lipid, respectively. However, there is no evidence for the difference in distribution of total PCB levels by genders. Total dioxin-like PCBs differed significantly (p < 0.0001) between the sites (median 109.78, 50.88, and 166.99 pmol/g lipid, respectively) and genders of Novafeltria and Pavia (p ¼ 0.011 and 0.009, respectively). PCB 138, 153, 170, and 180 differed significantly between the places of residence (p < 0.0001) with higher values in Milan population. In the overall population, total PCB and PCB 138, 153, 156, 170, and 180 correlated positively with age (correlations range between 0.320 and 0.569, p < 0.0001). In Novafeltria, the correlations ranged between 0.545 and 0.670, and in Pavia, the correlations ranged between 0.516 and 0.666. In Milan, correlations with age range between 0.327 and 0.417 for total PCB and congeners 138, 153, and 180. With an exception of PCB 170, there was no evidence of significant difference in the distribution of most abundant PCB congeners and total PCB across the body mass index categories.

Purpose: Despite the great nutritional relevance of fish consumption in human diet, nowadays, one... more Purpose: Despite the great nutritional relevance of fish consumption in human diet, nowadays, one of the main concerns of federal governmental authorities is heavy metal contamination. One possible cause of this contamination is the industrial activity. The consequences of human intoxication by metals can be severe, ranging from involuntary shaking to coma and even death. In this context, the aim of this study was to analyze metals concentration in fish species from São Francisco River (Brazil). Methods: The study was performed in São Francisco River (Minas Gerais State) in July, 2010. A viscera pool of gill, liver, kidneys and muscular samples were obtained from 21 fish species (Prochilodus vimboides, Brycon lundii, Rhinelepis aspera, Salminus brasiliensis and Piaractus mesopotamicus), all of which having lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium and zinc concentration measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry. Results: Our study revealed that cadmium was elevated in muscular samples of all fish species, surpassing the values permitted by Brazilian laws (1.0 ppm). In pool viscera, the highest values of cadmium concentration were found in Piaractus mesopotamicus (6.19 ppm). In pool viscera, the zinc concentration did not exceed the acceptable values (50 ppm). However, in Salminus brasiliensis presented the highest value (17.82 ppm), which probably happened since this is a predatory fish. It was concluded that the high cadmium concentration in fish from São Francisco River indicate a concerning risk not only to the environment, but to the population of this region, serving, thereby, as a warning in relation to the environmental pollution.
Concentrations of 36 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were measured in serum of 372 Itali... more Concentrations of 36 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were measured in serum of 372 Italian residents of general population living in Novafeltria, Pavia, and Milan. Total PCB level differed significantly between these sites (p < 0.0001) with median concentrations of 836.50, 1354.57, and 2062.08 pmol/g lipid, respectively. However, there is no evidence for the difference in distribution of total PCB levels by genders. Total dioxin-like PCBs differed significantly (p < 0.0001) between the sites (median 109.78, 50.88, and 166.99 pmol/g lipid, respectively) and genders of Novafeltria and Pavia (p ¼ 0.011 and 0.009, respectively). PCB 138, 153, 170, and 180 differed significantly between the places of residence (p < 0.0001) with higher values in Milan population. In the overall population, total PCB and PCB 138, 153, 156, 170, and 180 correlated positively with age (correlations range between 0.320 and 0.569, p < 0.0001). In Novafeltria, the correlations ranged between 0.545 and 0.670, and in Pavia, the correlations ranged between 0.516 and 0.666. In Milan, correlations with age range between 0.327 and 0.417 for total PCB and congeners 138, 153, and 180. With an exception of PCB 170, there was no evidence of significant difference in the distribution of most abundant PCB congeners and total PCB across the body mass index categories.
