Robert Herman has been a street photographer since his student time at New York University in the late 1970's. Back then, he started to capture New York, the city's beautiful diversity of people, reflections and unique coincidental moments on rolls and rolls of analogue film.

I like this photo because it is so unique. It almost looks more like a painting than a photo. It's hard to see all of the images projected onto the woman in the photo because the photo is so small here, but I think they contrast interestingly. Mostly I just think this was an unusual and artistic use of photography.

These images are selections from my book of photographs, The New Yorkers . Many of them were made in Soho, Little Italy, Tribeca, Greenwich Village and the Lower East Side, in a period of accelerated transformation in the early eighties. At that time, these neighborhoods contained elements of three distinct groups: the people who had lived and worked there for many years and had their ethnic background in common and second, the artists who came in in the late 60's and 70's in search of…
