Nelson Makamo Paintings Of Rural South Africa

Makamo, born in 1982 in Modimolle in South Africa’s Limpopo province, displayed exceptional artistic aptitude since childhood itself. Such was his passion for art that he decided to make it his career. So, it wasn’t surprising that he enrolled in a three-year printmaking course at Artist Proof Studios in Johannesburg to hone his artistic skills.

CAPE TOWN — Does art have the capacity to restore our disposition? I would venture a contingent response based on my experience of South African octogenarian Esther Mahlangu and her paintings, which evoke, albeit remotely, the play of stained glass windows and come across as both therapeutic and elevating.
