To build or not to build, that was the question. And a very difficult one for Anne Williams to answer as she contemplated building anew or renovating her family’s historic home in Dallas’ University Park neighborhood. As newlyweds, the interior designer and her husband purchased the house with the intention of staying there forever, but when the household of two multiplied, they inevitably needed more room to grow.

“I wanted a house in the mountains, not a mountain house,” is what Carolyn Kendall’s client announced at the beginning of the renovation and decoration of his family’s Cashiers getaway. Nashville-based Kendall, head of Alcott Interiors, answered the call by sending the heavy references to the location packing and adding fresh paint, smart changes to the layout to improve flow, lively wallpapers, and comfortable upholstery in pretty shades of greens and blues.

Sims and Mike Wachholz lived in their historic Jacksonville, Florida, house for two years before embarking on a major renovation. During that time, they absorbed the way light shifted through the rooms, the way their family used the spaces, and the impact color played throughout the house. Stan Dixon and Jackye Lanham’s client had spent time in the Cotswolds during her youth, and the charm of the region and British architecture remained imbedded in her mind’s eye. Dixon, who had spent time studying in England as an architectural student, and Lanham, a professed Anglophile, easily dialed into that aesthetic during the design process.
