1868 – Gaiety Theatre, The Strand, London

Architect: C.J. Phipps Deesigned by the theatre architect C.J. Phipps, who also designed the 1871 Gaiety Theatre in Dublin, this was a sumptuous rebuild of an existing theatre. Whilst the three theatres within the Lyric Theatre Complex draw their own distinct identities from the types of performing arts to which they cater, their designs follow a unified approach essential to both creating a complementary family of theatres and a coherent building. Each theatre therefore has its own distinct colour which relates to its function. This colour is not only applied in the auditoriums, but also in the correlating foyers, thus also acting as a means of wayfinding. Whilst the three theatres within the Lyric Theatre Complex draw their own distinct identities from the types of performing arts to which they cater, their designs follow a unified approach essential to both creating a complementary family of theatres and a coherent building. Each theatre therefore has its own distinct colour which relates to its function. This colour is not only applied in the auditoriums, but also in the correlating foyers, thus also acting as a means of wayfinding.

Behind the curtain

A theatre Books & Crannies is located in the old Iris Theatre. The front of the building has been posted many times on this site. The theatre was built in in the mid 1920s and closed in 2001. I went to one movie there, Titanic. There are train tracks behind the theatre and when the train went past it would walk all over the sound. It still was neat to go to the movies in a real theatre and not a 30 plex. Even though most of the space is now the book store, they have an area in the back…
