Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san

Every day, Naoto Hachiouji is teased relentlessly by Hayase Nagatoro, a first year student he meets one day in the library while working on his manga. After reading his story and seeing his awkward demeanor, she decides from that moment on to toy with him, even calling him "Senpai" in lieu of using his real name.

At first, Nagatoro's relentless antics are more bothersome than anything and leave him feeling embarrassed, as he is forced to cater to her whims. However, as they spend more time together, a strange sort of friendship develops between them, and Naoto finds that life with Nagatoro can even be fun. But one thing's for sure: his days will never be dull again.

tl;dr: A pretty good girl bullying guy rom-com.

This anime is about the budding relationship between a gyaru named Nagataro and her timid Senpai. The senpai is apparently named Hachiouji, but I don’t remember that name ever being used so for the sake of this review I’ll just keep calling him Senpai. This is one of those anime that heavily involves a girl teasing the guy she likes. It starts quite a bit more extreme than any of the others I’ve watched. In the first episode I felt that Nagataro was just downright sadistic, and that Senpai actually seemed to respond well to her cruelty only ... made sense if he was a masochist. That’s a fair enough dynamic to write a story about, though one I’m not particularly interested in.

Thankfully for me, the rest of the show is nothing like that. Nagatoro keeps teasing Senpai, but there’s very quickly a major drop in how cruel she is, with things continuing to mellow out even further as the show progresses. By the end of the season, her teasing is mostly just superficial other than specific instances such as her trying to motivate him to run faster when training for a marathon. She’s still throwing out loads of insults, but they’re repetitive to the point they lose all meaning and Senpai takes literally no damage from them.

To be honest, at this point it kind of felt like Nagatoro was the one taking more damage due to Senpai than the other way around. Mainly because she’s clearly incredibly in love with him. Senpai remains a doormat and doesn’t really fight back at all, but occasionally still manages to turn things around and do something that completely flusters Nagatoro. She also gets jealous incredibly easily, and her gyaru friends basically use that fact to screw with her. She’s still trying to maintain that she doesn’t care about Senpai at all and thus whenever something happens she does her best to hide how she’s feeling, but that just makes things more amusing. The dynamic between all of them is mostly just funny.

Relationship wise, there is slow and steady relationship growth between the two. It’s nothing too deep or exciting. It’s simply a result of them spending time with each other, but that’s fine and works well. Rather, the part near the end that involved actual drama between the two of them felt pretty forced and wasn’t really enjoyable at all. Still, the finale involved Nagatoro and the gyaru’s legitimately for the first time helping out Senpai without any pretenses, so it was a nice point to end on.

The art and animation were pretty great. It managed to convey Nagatoro’s expressions really well, which was absolutely critical for this anime to work at all. But even beyond that I felt the character designs were pretty good for the simple setting. The OP was great in terms of the song and visuals. The ED was decent in both regards. The soundtrack was not particularly memorable but seemed to work well enough.

Mixed Feelings

Okay, let's get this out of the way: Nagatoro is maybe the second most annoying character I've ever seen in anime - second only to Yozora in "I don't have many friends" (and her friends are close behind). The first ten episodes I would have rated this a three and not moved on to the second seasons. The last two redeemed it - a *little*. But I don't like her. I mean, I *really* don't like her. I get that she has her own things going on and it might be the way she expresses affection, but I don't ... care. She's awful. I mean, really awful. And even though she gets a little better through the season, and "senpai" doesn't seem to mind so much, it doesn't change that she's awful.

That's the thing about this anime - the thing that makes it very much like a watered down version of "I don't have many friends" - it's the characters that made this anime what it is, and that's not a compliment. There's not a one in the bunch that I actually liked or had any sympathy for whatsoever. Literally not one. Nagatoro, as I mentioned, is annoying. Senpai is a mess. Nagatoro's friends are even worse than Nagatoro, and I think they got way too much screen time (what they did at the culture festival actively made me angry, and it's HARD for an anime character to do that to me). Even the club president is kind of a mess.

So, you might ask, Lycoping, if you hated this anime so much, why did you end up scoring it higher than a 3? Well, that's simple. It actually did make me laugh. The characters are awful, the plot (what little it had) simplistic and cliched, it's ecchi or at the least ecchi adjacent, but it did have some truly funny moments. They weren't enough to save it in my view, but they were enough to have allowed me to actually watch it through. So there's that.

Everything else is fine. The art is okay (well, in more ways than one, you'll see...), the sound is okay, the voice actors, well, voice acted their little hearts out, everything was fine technically - except when Nagatoro lost her fingers and her hands turned into stumps, but I guess that's just the art style. It's just the characters that really messed this up.

Mixed feelings. If you can get past Nagatoro's absolute awfulness and Senpai's utter lack of a spine, maybe you'll enjoy it. I didn't, really, but the laughter was enough to make me not entirely regret watching it.

Woah! This is awful!

Slice-of-Life is a genre that isn't too hard to make some good anime out of. Quirky characters, silly plotlines, and humor are mainstays of the genre, all of which Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san attempts to pull off. It fails horribly.

Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san attempts a Family Guy style episode scheme, where none of the episodes are really in a cohesive storyline until the last few episodes that actually have a story going on. The episodes are gag-driven and follow the antics of Nagatoro and her victim of Paisen (who has a canon name that I don't recall ever being said in the anime, lol). The dynamic ... between the two is the focal part of the show. And if you love sexual assault, you're in for a treat!

Every gag in the show is as followed:

"Woah, Senpai, I'm going to say something extremely suggestive!"
"Woah, I'm blushing..."
"Woah, what a fucking virgin!"

Throw in some scenes where they FORCE the MC to touch their privates and then make fun of HIM for getting flustered about it. There are multiple scenes where the MC is sexually assaulted and forced to grab onto a characters boob. But does he do anything about it? Lol no. It's not funny, it never was funny, and it is genuinely disgusting to see it passed off as humor. Did I forget to mention every character is a minor?

It's blatant that the entire story of Nagatoro is a self-insert fantasy of the author. The MC is a quiet artist who draws corny manga with a obvious humiliation fetish that goes as far to Stockholm syndrome. I don't usually mind obvious, bland self inserts if they're at least tolerable but it's just infuriating to see the most spineless loser get sexually assaulted and do nothing about it for the 12th episode in a row.

The comedy is dry and disgusting, the art is uninspired and boring, the characters are one-dimensional and have psychotic, rapist personalities, and the music is as generic as it comes. Except for the main theme song, it's okay, I guess.

Nagatoro offers absolutely nothing to the Slice-of-Life genre and serves as 12 episodes of pedophilic fanservice to the bad parts of Twitter and Reddit. If you're rating this anything higher than a 1, you seriously need to question your morals and ethics.
