in general i kinda fucking despise the idea that any group is a "canary" for right wing/fascist violence/persecution. not least bc every single example is just a continuation of the status quo of oppression of marginalized groups and this implicitly erases what is usually centuries of oppression at minimum of that and all other oppressed groups, but also because it's a nauseatingly self-centered way to refer to ppl who are, in most cases, way more fucked over than the person making the comment (unless they are self-tokenizing in which case it's nauseating for the same but also other reasons)
