Welcome to the Night Market! Book One is already complete and up for sale. Book two is well underway.

The Night Market is an interactive novel in which you awaken to a lantern filled world with no memory of how you got there. Desperate to get home, you must find the gate that leads back to your world, while navigating a foreign land, rife with political intrigue, arbitrary rules and secrets designed to keep you distracted. Nine barons rule the market , a place so vast that not even they can truly know its scope. But, one baron holds the key to your safe return home. Yet, no one has seen or heard from him in over a decade.

A rakish sort with an easy smile and a penchant for adventure. He is seen frequenting taverns and can generally be found where life is in full swing. Local thief and all around charming individual that upon meeting you has taken a special interest in your plight. Though he seems to be able to offer very little in the way of solutions, he is all too happy to stand by your side as you carve your way in this world.

Can be romanced as a triad poly or a v poly.

Owner of Hazel’s Apothecary and a grey lump of a cat named Mr. Billows. Considered the local ‘bog witch’, she has been secluded away to her own sector within the market. Known for her tonics and herbal remedies, Hazel is viewed as a pariah. A woman who will curse you on sight and whose shop hands have all gone mysteriously missing over the years. Though, upon meeting her, she seems sweet and eager to help you find your way home.

Can be romanced only in a singular romance.

image

Guard Captain of the docks, a local penitentiary for the wrong doers of the Night Market, and the warden of the holding cells you are placed in upon arriving. A stern and straight forward man with little emotion other than to be weary of the events of his day. Gabriel arrived in the Night Market only a decade prior, but refuses to speak of where he hailed from before. Overall, he is a shut-down and bitter man, scorned by what the world has given him thus far.

Can be romanced in a triad poly or in a singular romance

A courtesan of the pleasure district and a sought after political force. A stunning beauty, educated and refined, who unwittingly has her hands in most of the affairs and secrets of the market proper. A beguiling woman who will be whoever she needs to for the right price. Everyone claims to know her, and yet no one can tell you a truthful detail about her. It is said she almost gave it all away for the man she loved, yet when asked, she only bats her lashes and smiles, claiming to have loved far too many to even know who you are referring to.

Can be romanced in a triad poly or a singular romance.

How would all the ROs deal with a NM who did change their whole appearance all the time like clothes?

Gabriel would hate it. I mean HATE it. He would get confused. The consistency of his day would be thrown off. He would look at everyone he passed while on patrol and wonder if it was MC. He would end up coming to MC begging for them to stop.

Bella would find it amusing but be over it soon. She would want the MC to only use that to their advantage while hunting down information. At home, there would be a naked rule. MC would not be able to change from their OG form.

Hazel would be okay with it after she was used to it but I think in the beginning, it would scare her. Every time MC walks into the apothecary, she knows its them before seeing them. But then she would look up and they would be standing there with a new face. She would scream.

Milo would find it funny. And interesting. And he would probably be turned on by it, if we’re honest. It would be if the MC’s voice changed with it that he might get a little weirded out.

Malcolm would mainly just be concerned and wanting to make sure that the MC was doing this because they wanted to. Not because they were trying to impress anyone. But if it was what the MC wanted, he would be behind it.

I was jealous while romancing Belladonna in Book One, but it was never because of her past relationships, or her previous attraction to Gabriel. Nor did I ever feel like she would cheat on me, since A) that would be extremely ooc and B) we weren’t even in a relationship for most of the book lol. What got me jealous was the history she had with Gabriel. He will always know a version of Bella that we won’t, and the thought of that is bittersweet. It’s a different kind of intimacy than the one she shares with MC, but it’s still intimacy, and that’s enough to invoke jealousy. That being said, I don’t think this is a bad thing. EVERYONE has a history, but it’s that history that shaped them into who they are in the present, and it’s their relationship with you that will shape who they are in the future. And I think there’s something beautiful in that, as upsetting as it may be for some people.

I really like that point. Yes, that bittersweet thing is such a human trait to feel. Knowing you were not there during that time. I get that with my husband at times given that he had a previous marriage. There is a sting there.

I also think you are right that EVERYONE has a history that defines us. It’s about how the partner acts IN the relationship that I think matters more than anything else. Unless a person has had NO romantic inclinations before, they are going to have a past and not everyone hates their exes when they break up.

Also, side note. This doesn’t have to do with you, anon. It just made me think of this. We really need to start moving away from this idea of RO’s being the NM first and them being the RO’s first. The entire virginity thing is kind of creepy. But that might just be me talking given that I have teen daughters.

Anonymous asked:

Is the relationship between MC and their RO common knowledge in TNM? Is it like a celebrity relationship where people sort of just assume they’re dating?? What are their thoughts on the relationship???

I think it is just now becoming known that the Night Market is the Night Market. So of course people are going to start to realize who the NM is dating, especially given that every RO within this game is a notable character within the world. The rumor mill is going to start churning and I absolutely hope to bring it up in game because I think it will be different given who the MC is dating.

Some people have big issues with it though because everyone always has to have an opinion. There is going to be some that are like “Hazel is too weird to be dating NM” or “The Warden? Great. Fascist society here we come”.

People suck, no matter where we live. I’ll let the NM have a choice of freaking out on those people are not.

I think what I'm finding baffling throughout this whole discussion is how much people are discussing these characters as if they themselves are dating them rather than a character they've created is romancing them. To some extent, your own preferences might dictate whether you want to pursue a romance route (like I don't go for cold LI routes first because it's not my thing). But there's a lot of projecting of people's own issues and baggage . . . onto characters. Fictional characters who are there to progress the plot. Make a guy to give them a kiss. Make a jealous guy. Make a laidback one. Maybe don't be so self-entitled to whinge to the author of an IF because a romance route isn't custom catered to you down to the last detail. Either make a character who can cope or not at all for the drama or just do a different route. It is definitely an issue atm - I mean in recent years if we look at BG3, the devs let fans dictate how characters are to the extent they're not even allowed to be kind of mean or have certain boundaries, watering them down every time. This isn't Build-A-LI - they're characters in their own right with their own preferences, goals, interests, who might be interested in another character, might be obsessed with the mc, might find everyone a chore. Customise your own character - let the love interests be who they are and work out what kind of oc can handle that or not.

Just today (or the day or writing this since I queue everything up) my friend and I were making characters. They had a character that I wanted to romance for a while in our RP but nothing ever felt right. So, we sat down and I made one up. Because that’s what fiction is. Making up characters and exploring the world. I love that kind of building. Trying on new hats. Now, I don’t know if that’s because I have a theater and improv background but that’s what I did for most of my youth so it makes sense to me to do it in writing.

The way you describe MC makes me think of the characters that are the "heart of the party" type, which from my experience people either love or hate- and always big discussions on "what do they bring to the table". Which I think makes it even harder since it's MC, who the player has to play through.

I think there is a sense of what does MC contribute at times? Which, I don’t really find an issue with since this is kind of you reacting to the world around you and the people you meet. But, I don’t think everyone likes that.

I honestly did not put a lot of thought into that until the complaints started coming in at the end of book 1. It wasn’t even something that crossed my mind. I always like to explore other characters in games and such and so I was just going with that mentality. It wasn’t even a question for me. But, if that’s not the type of game or story someone likes to read, I can see where they would have an issue with it.

There are plenty of other ifs that have casts with pre existing relationships, idk why yours gets so much flak.

Because I bite back and post them. I think a lot of people delete their negative asks. I delete some but only because they get repetitive. I think just pretending like the negative ones don’t come isn’t really helpful though to other writers. I know it can weigh people down and so I am always encouraging to do what your comfort level is.
