Drawings of male fig wasps of the same two species as my last post, done as part of my masters thesis a few years ago.
Male fig wasps generally look entirely different to the females with most having no wings, vestigial/no eyes and tiny antennae. They cannot survive long outside the fig - their only role being to mate and then chew an exit from the fig for the winged females. ๐ฑ

Collared pratincole in June on Wheldrake Ings, Yorkshire. Painted for the upcoming book โBirds of the Lower Derwent Valleyโ by Craig Ralston.
I grew up next to the Lower Derwent Valley and do miss the smell of meadowsweet underfoot and skies full of noisy swifts.
Drawings of female fig wasps done for my masters thesis a few years back - so tiny but such incredible animals!
Fig wasps pollinate the flowers within fig fruits, with the majority of the 800+ fig species being pollinated by a unique species of wasp. Female fig wasps are 1-2mm long and only live a few days but the furthest pollination distance found between two fig trees is over 160km (Ficus sycomorus and Ceratosolen arabicus in Namibia)! ๐ธ
(if you want to learn more about fig-fig wasp biology, my thesis film is on Figweb!)
Updated my INPRNT with some more pieces and all currently 30% off โ๏ธ
