Daytime dresses during the Crinoline Period could either consist of one, singular piece or of a bodice and a separate skirt. They were characterized by their low, "dropped-shoulder" armholes and high necks.

The iconic crinoline - the "cage" crinoline or hoop skirt - which made it's debut in the 1850s, reached the zenith of its real estate in the first years of the next decade. The shape of the thing would gradually shift toward the back during the following few years, before completely disappearing at the beginning of the new decade; the "business at the back" we see so much of here, became the the bustle, the look of the 1870s. I'm going to Gettysburg for Remembrance Day in mid-November, meaning I have less than three weeks to make an entire 1860s outfit. I swear I haven't been putting it off, I just really haven't had time! I did manage to pull together all of the supplies I need so I can just work straight through with no delays.
