Anjali | QUIRKY CERAMICS on Instagram: "Tip for closed forms: 👻Even walls with a wooden rib so the cylinder won’t flop while closing 👻 Leave an inch or more at the top of the cylinder to close and to avoid buckling 👻 Use rib to strengthen the walls and collar it while pulling towards inside 👻 Compress the top after closing! I have used Kota porcelain here which is great for this form! It’s a translucent clay great for pumpkins and ghost luminaries! You could find it and more at @claykingceramics Thanks clay king 👑@claykingceramics👑 for sponsoring this post! Sneaky little work arounds. Jasmine Fitzwilliam on Instagram: "Some of y’all asked for more detail in my closed-form jar video from last week, so now that my jars are fired and cute as hell, here’s a slower version where we are just focusing on the part where we carve the lid off! If you want to see the throw for the jar as well, that full video is maybe seven reels back or so. For this one I’m just really showing the minutiae of this carving process. This time I highlight the specific tools and how I’m using them as well. The only thing I forgot to mention is how deep I go through the wall as I’m creating the flange: I’m basically carving away about half the thickness of the wall. Then once the lid is off and I’ve smoothed the edges out, I’ll carve a little bit off the inside of the rim of the jar, and carve a litt Ceramic Closed Form, Closed Form Pottery Jar, Ceramic Box Painting Ideas, Closed Form Pottery, Clay Videos, Pottery Jar, Advanced Ceramics, Ceramic Boxes, Thrown Pottery

The Craft Pottery Studio on Instagram: "It’s demo day! This week, @nadiajonesstudio takes us through throwing a closed form for a teapot lid and body using 1.5kg of clay.

Creating a lid using this technique is just one way to do it - you can throw them separately. In order to achieve this result, you need to retain plenty of thickness and structure in your clay wall whilst throwing. Even and slightly thicker walls enable you to close up your rim without it buckling or warping, have enough excess for a finial (knob), and enough clay to push downwards to form your sunken gallery.

Next week, Nadia will show you how she separates the lid from the body, trims the lid and gallery for a snug fit, before removing excess weight and defining shape with trimming."
