a piece of pie sitting on top of a white plate

So while I was living in New Mexico I was introduced to Prune Pies, yum! Usually made in an horno, which is a large outdoor oven made of adobe, many of the local pueblos make and sell them on the side of the road or in local shops. They became one of my favorite treats while living in New Mexico and since moving back I've missed them dearly! It has been hard to find a recipe but I finally found one in a small pamphlet called "Sampling New Mexico Foods" printed in 1983, for the E. J. Martinez…

a pie sitting on top of a white plate next to a fork and spoons

Along with the typical back-to-school and fall-is-in-the-air vibe, for me September has always been a time to eat as many Italian prune plums as possible. My mother made it so: an end of summer requirement like the homework and piano practice to come, prune plums were to be eaten in great quantities, like a sweet drippy book end to all the fun and freedom I was leaving behind. My favorite way to eat these special fruits is baked simply in a pie.

a chocolate tart with pretzels on top and some dipping sauce next to it

Patisserie ARTE AUX PRUNEAUX AVEYRONNAISE This is the traditional dessert from Aveyron, the part of France where I come from. At home, I tend to use an Aubrac tea bag, which is an infusion of local plants, instead of an English breakfast tea bag. It doesn’t make a big difference, however, it’s just the tradition. Serves 10 (24cm tart) / Preparation time: 20 + 15 minutes / Proving time: 2 hours at room temperature + 1 hour in the fridge / Baking time: 35–45 minutes at 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4…

a spoon is in a bowl with chocolate pudding

Prunes, or dried plums, are a delicious, often underrated baking ingredient in the United States. In France, the fruit is used in sweet and savory recipes, including this one for a popular dessert filled with frangipane, or buttery almond cream, and plenty of plumped fruit, baked together until the filling turns a golden brown on top and the prunes are as sweet and tender as caramels. You could use a store-bought pie or tart shell, slightly parbaked before filling it up, or follow a recipe…

a slice of cheesecake on a plate with a checkered table cloth in the background

Most of the pies I've encountered have had a butter, shortening, lard or cookie crust, but the Belgian Pie consists of a yeast-raised crust and can be filled with any of a number of fillings. Fruit fillings like apple, prune and raisin are popular as is rice. Known in Dutch as Rijsttaart, the filling is akin to rice pudding.

plum galette pie on a plate with one slice missing

Whether you call it a rustic plum tart (American), a plum galette (French), or a crostata (Italian), you’re going to love this easy summer dessert. With a crackly pastry crust folded over a filling of luscious purple plums, it’s essentially a free-form pie baked on a sheet pan – and it has a deliciously high crust-to-fruit ratio.

a pie with raisins and cherries on it sitting on a red table

serving up swapatorium leftovers! Ahhh... Prunes! They aren't just mother nature's secret helper anymore! Now they can be served up in a dessert as seen here in Prunes n' Cream Pie! Sounds appetizing, right? This recipe comes from the American Home magazine, February 1958. I can't recall the last time I have seen a recipe that involved prunes since they featured 'Hot Prune Toddy'* in Smooth Move Monthly, a Guide for Swinging Senior Living. Prunes really do get a bad rap don't they? Poor…
