As empresario of the Austin Colony, Stephen Austin had a large stake in the future of Texas.  Each empresario was awarded a total of 23,027.5 acres of land for every 100 families they settled.  Austin was allowed a land grant for 2000 families.  By 1829, he had settled 1200 families for an award to himself of 276,330 acres, with the potential of 184,220 more for a total of 460,550 acres.
