Papers by Daniel Neumann
in South Georgia in 2012, sought to evaluate the
archaeological potential of this strategic mountainous region
located at the crossroad of several networks of communication.
With a focus on the 4th and 3rd Millennium
BCE, the combination of satellite imagery analysis,
landscape observations, intensive surface collection,
and cleaning of an exposed modern disturbance provide
rich information on the Early and Late Bronze Age occupation
of Baraletis Gora/Amagleba as well as on regional
changes in landscape use. This newly acquired data offers
solid ground for future research in this high-altitude
environment.

The essays in this book aim to elucidate this phenomenon, explore its diverse material manifestations and question the social function(s) of these artefacts. The case studies range from the Neolithic to the Early Iron Age, featuring material scattered throughout Europe, from the French Atlantic coast to Northern Europe, all the way to Southeastern Europe and the Aegean.

The origins of this publication lie in session #259 'The Creative Reinterpretation of Material Culture in Prehistoric Societies: A Reappraisal' organised by Ariane Ballmer and Daniel Neumann at the 25th Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists in Bern, 4–7 September 2019. Three papers from this session are published in the book (Ballmer & Neumann; Kaul et al.; Marangou), along with three further guest contributions (Amkreutz & Fontijn; Cabanillas de la Torre & Gomez de Soto; Cassen & Grimaud).

This book is dedictaed to David Fontijn, our colleague and mentor, who sadly passed away in 2023. In our minds, he will continue to stimulate our thinking.
