I spent many years planning this collage in the 1980's and 1990's, saving newspaper cuttings of what turned out to be the final struggle against apartheid. These cuttings make up the background to the image. The picture represents a 'timeline' moving towards the viewer with the 'fist' representing the belief in the cause and defiance of the state, and finally Mandela leaving prison and becoming president.
