When, in 1956, Don Murray appeared opposite Marilyn Monroe as the rambunctious cowpoke Beau Decker in Bus Stop he was an obscure 26-year-old Broadway actor. “No one could have been less equipped for the job,” he said. “I was a New Yorker who’d never ridden a real horse and had tackled football players but never a 500lb steer.” Monroe, who played Chérie, the saloon singer kidnapped by Decker in a misguided attempt at courtship, had no idea who Murray was — but Murray had no idea who Monroe…
