Land snail

A gene in snails that determines whether their shells twist clockwise or anti-clockwise has been discovered by a team of international researchers. It could offer clues to how the same gene affects body asymmetry in other animals including humans, they report.

Giant African land snail (Achatina fulica) is one of the largest terrestrial gastropods. They have an average lifespan of about 5-7 years. The species is native to East Africa, but it has been widely introduced to other parts of the world through the pet trade, as a food resource, and by accidental introduction.
