Okinawa: Whispers of the Ryukyu Kingdom - Journeys in Japan | NHK WORLD-JAPAN Ryukyu Islands, Sengoku Period, Pop Culture Fashion, Castle Ruins, Stone Walls, Sacred Places, Learn Japanese, Place Of Worship, 14th Century

Across the Ryukyu Islands, you can find elevated sites surrounded by stone walls. The walls protected gusuku or castles built between the 14th and the 15th centuries. Unlike the castles in mainland Japan that emerged in the Sengoku period (15th to 16th centuries), gusuku were also sacred places of community rituals and festivals. Photographer Alfie Goodrich feels the history of Okinawa through exploring these precious ruins.

The cultural roots of contemporary Okinawa lie in the Ryūkyū Kingdom, which lasted for 450 years from 1429. This small island kingdom developed its own distinctive culture, bringing together elements from Japan, China, Korea, and Southeast Asia, and established an international position for itself through trade and diplomacy. The traditions of the kingdom live on in the vibrant culture of the islands today.
