Opening the Portals of Discovery

  • As noted above, I’m an archivist by trade, dad by calling, and a 51 y.o. cishet man. I’ve been using Tumblr on & off since circa 2009 but I started this blog in 2022. I mostly reblog stuff with an effort to share posts that don’t have many notes or are cool things I find from years and years ago.

My fandoms: Star Trek, Doctor Who, Star Wars, The Muppets

Mostly though I post about great books, great movies, and great music as well as photography, Boston and New England things, and left-leaning politics.

  • 365 Movies in 365 Days: Food (1992) #AtoZChallenge

  • This year I’m trying to watch one movie every day of the year, with the provision that the movie be no longer than 36.5 minutes long. I’ll be selecting movies randomly from this list that’s already way too long, but I still welcome suggestions for short films.

In April, I will be less random in my selection of movies as I’m folding this into the Blogging A to Z Challenge and will be reviewing 26…

  • SONG OF THE DAY - The 50s

  • Throughout April, I will be posting some of my favorite songs from the 1950s.

    TITLE: I Smell a Rat

    ARTIST: Big Mama Thornton

    DATE: 1954

WHY I LOVE THIS SONG: Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton is best known for being the first to record “Hound Dog” (a song later stolen given greater prominence by Elvis Presley), but I’ve always liked this song about another animal better. The classic kiss-off song is a great example of rowdy rhythm and blues from the 1950s. Thornton did not conform to gender norms of the time, wearing men’s-style suits, and sometimes performing as a man.

Joan Blondell in Gold Diggers 1933

“We must put brassieres on Joan Blondell and make her cover up her breasts because, otherwise, we are going to have these pictures stopped in a lot of places. I believe in showing their forms but, for Lord's sake, don't let those bulbs stick out.” - Jack Warner
