Twenty –three plus years ago I entered the field of education. I started as a substitute teacher and enrolled into the teacher certification program at Ohio Dominican College currently Ohio Dominican University. Throughout the years I formalized my teaching by studying philosophers and authors such as John Dewey, Paulo Freire, and Jonathan Kozol. I have studied theories of Pierre Bourdieu and James Coleman, and have used a variety of teaching methods. My work with teachers, schools, classrooms, and communities is spent trying to spread knowledge about societal connections to cultural and social capitals.

150 50 A Teacher's Account of Urban Schools introduces various way to teach culture and identity ... more 150 50 A Teacher's Account of Urban Schools introduces various way to teach culture and identity in the classroom. In order to do this , school districts and teachers must work hand-in -hand to create a healthy environment for children that addresses the whole culture of a child- instead of making assumptions about one aspect of a child's culture.

This paper analyzes the climate and culture of Urban High School. To evaluate the climate of the ... more This paper analyzes the climate and culture of Urban High School. To evaluate the climate of the building, the team administered a Wayne K. Hoy instrument, the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire (OCDQ-RS) to sixteen staff members. The team also conducted
interviews with the building’s administration and six staff members. The questionnaire and interviews indicated that the staff felt a lack of engagement with the students and the administration. The team offers several recommendations for improving the climate of Urban High School, including consistently emphasizing the school’s mission and vision, offering specific professional development, redefining the Principal Advisory Committee, and beginning ,student/staff spotlights.

The focus of my research is making connections to three theoretical frameworks Bronfenbrenner (ec... more The focus of my research is making connections to three theoretical frameworks Bronfenbrenner (ecological theory), Pierre Bourdieu (Cultural Capitals), and James Coleman (Social Capital). My research connects all three theories and helps teachers build relationships with students. Relationships with students are built through awareness of how to achieve and maintain academic success, positive school relationships, and community awareness. Other areas of significances are students develop skills to lead the school in meetings, panel discussions, seminars, speech contests, and positive school rallies that will reflect students input. Positive student relationships provide alternative solutions to problems that students encounter at school and in the community.

The role of culture and identity reflects many of the conflicts, tensions, and forces of race, ge... more The role of culture and identity reflects many of the conflicts, tensions, and forces of race, gender, socioeconomic class, and the role of teaching and learning in a societal context. Culture can be defines as the knowledge, beliefs, values, morals, and rituals of a group. Identity is how knowledge, beliefs, values, morals and rituals are developed and used. Both areas have connections and disconnections in school effectiveness, change, and improvement. Culture and identity theories are used to create Professional Development (PD) in schools. Professional Development is the advancement of skills or expertise to succeed in a particular profession gained through continued education. Professional development should address all areas of teacher’s knowledge; create a supportive, encouraging, safe environment for experimentation and technology use in the classroom.

The Kool-Aid Man encompasses the writings of Richard Joseph Tabler he describes his journey throu... more The Kool-Aid Man encompasses the writings of Richard Joseph Tabler he describes his journey through the University of Michigan Masters program in sociology. These writings formulate a train of thought of ideas in consciousness during the middle 80s. His writings travel through race in the forefront of the justice system and incarceration to a book called What's Fair to discrimination of blacks on white college campuses. He compares that to rape of African American intellect. He also writes a narrative about social work and what goes on in the prison system. He researches a study that he produced about Homeboys and White Boys. He ends his writing with a program In Michigan that was called the Achievement House. An analysis of his writings could be summarized as social justice and injustice in the prison system .
As a teacher today I think it’s important for society to understand the connections to three theoretical frameworks Bronfenbrenner (ecological theory), Pierre Bourdieu (Cultural Capitals), and James Coleman (Social Capital). These systems are related to Race Consciousness.
