Their value depends on the composition of the groups in which the test was applied. It is rarely recognised that sensitivity and specificity change during the course of a disease. The interpretation of their value appears to be difficult. The likelihood ratio combines sensitivity and specificity, and is therefore associated with the same problems. The likelihood ratio is Bayes' rule in its simplest form: how does a given probability (in this case that of a particular disease being present) change with the addition of a single new fact (i.e., the result of a diagnostic test)? The Bayesian approach is applied in various fields but rarely in clinical practice, because the prior probability of a diagnosis is difficult to quantify. Likelihood ratios are useful when studying the diagnostic process and when teaching the diagnostic thought process. They can also be applied in the statistical interpretation of clinical trial results.

Consequently, the importance of social learning for students has gained increased prominence, with Teacher Learning Groups (TLGs), that is, social configurations in which students, in-service teachers, and teacher educators, sometimes supplemented by researchers and/or experts, collaboratively learn through social interactions, being introduced in teacher training institutes. Ordinarily, TLGs organized their meetings face-to-face; however, due to COVID-19 measures, they had to rapidly transition to blended meetings, which in turn impacted upon students’ basic psychological needs.MethodsIn the present study, a convergent parallel mixed-methods design was utilized. The variables Social Configurations (Practice integration, Long-term orientation and goals; Shared identity and equal relationships) ...

This study was carried out among 211 teachers working in primary and secondary education in the Netherlands. TPD at work appeared to be related to flexible competence and proved to be a mediator between job resources, on the one hand, and flexible competence, on the other hand. Job resources positively enhanced TPD at work and in turn were related to flexible competence. Moreover, a direct negative relationship between job demands and flexible competence was found. Keywords job demands and job resources, teachers ’ professional development at work, flexible competence, longitudinal design, mediation

Drawing on the literature, this article presents a study where students were stimulated to reflect during experiential learning, in order to both re- and de- contextualize their knowledge. We describe how different levels of prompted reflection can be related to academic performance and perceptions of the learning process. We found positive relationships between prompting reflection and the academic performance. It is therefore argued that prompting reflection leads to higher levels of reflection and better performance in writing. The results also show that higher levels of reflection do not have to diminish students’ motivation, perception of usefulness, interest and enjoyment during learning. Finally, the results reveal needs for encouraging more collaborative reflection during learning.
