Hello! You can call me Mellow! I post a lot of lotr thoughts on this blog, of wildly varying quality, and tag most of it #overthinkinglotr.

Other blogs:

I'm creating a webcomic adaptation of the Hobbit at @retellingthehobbit.

And my general art blog is @secretmellowart.

Here’s chapter 1 of my Hobbit comic!

Also Frodo and Sam are in love. They really Invented love didn’t they, iconic .....

I love getting asks/comments on my posts and talking to people!! <3333 But I sometimes Struggle with internet communication and take a while to answer them!  I appreciate you all! (......there are so many asks I haven’t answered I’m sorry ;_;. I hope to get to them eventually!)

“Give to this dog son of a wolf a human face, and the result will be Javert.”

I think a lot about the folkloric story that Victor Hugo describes (or invents) in Les Mis, that uses dogs/wolves as a metaphor for that way that Inspector Javert betrays his own social class. It feels very fairytale-like, so here’s a Lotte-Reiniger style adaptation. Many thoughts, many emotions. I may animate this eventually. (And thanks to @valvertweek for the motivation!)

hey what if i looked at your hobbit webcomic and cried. what then.

no but seriously the stained glass style is so evocative i really really adore it! it just works so well!! the proportions are good, there's a real sense of movement and energy and the mix between rigid straight lines and curves is wonderful. i think i also said it in my comment on ao3 but some of the perspective shots blew my mind. like there's one panel in the geometric style with just a hammer? insanity. i was losing my shit. it's just??? so good??? i love it so much i am putting it in my mouth and shaking it gnawing it biting it.

AHHH thank you so much for your kind comments (here and on Ao3!!!!) It took a while to figure out the Dwarven Stained Glass art style but I'm glad I got there eventually...every day is a new adventure! (also I believe you're referring to this page! And yeah that first panel gave me a lot of trouble to figure out! XD) Thank you again!!!!!!

A lot of people have asked me for my Secret to painting background art—- so I put together this short one-minute video on how I combine Blender 3D models with 2D illustrations!

Especially for the latest chapter of my Hobbit Comic I’ve posted over on @retellingthehobbit , I always use a 3D model as a base for more elaborate backgrounds— but the main place where I differ from other artists is that I also use 3D models as a reference for lighting and color. I do a little bit more work upfront in the 3D modeling phase so I have less to do in the Photoshop painting phase. It’s a workflow I really recommend if you have access to Blender! And if anyone wants any more tips, I’m happy to share.

From my main art blog! :D

A corner of the Shire! Some background details from the latest chapter of my comic adaptation of The Hobbit! The hobbit who lives here is a potter, which is why he has so many fancy little pots.

This was one of my favorite Shire backgrounds to paint! I love the look of dappled lighting, and how the shade of trees tends to make everything look very enclosed and cozy.

Do you ever post short fics or anything?

Yes! My biggest "fic project" is a gay little webcomic adaptation of the Hobbit (sideblog here., and my comic-only ao3 is here.) I also have a lot of prose fic! I'm at secretmellowblog on Ao3. The only prose Tolkien fanfic I've currently posted is the first chapter of "Even Monarchies Have Their Endings," a gay little fic about Bilbo accidentally convincing Thorin to abolish monarchy and convert Erebor into a democratic republic.

On my prose Ao3 you can also also find...mostly Les Mis fanfic, tbh. Here's my favorite of the Les Mis fics I've written. Thanks for your interest!!!!

I know I've said it before but every rewatch I do cements this thought further - elijah wood's performance in LOTR is absolutely insane, they really had a character whose name means "wise by experience", hired an 18-year-old to do it, and he delivered so much that not only is it a beautiful and moving role on its own, it's a performance equal to those of the absolute powerhouses he played side by side with like ian holm and ian mckellen. to name just a few

apparently it's not common knowledge that he was 18 at the time (insert that xkcd comic, you know which) but. yeah

"let's task this teenager with the monster assignment of portraying trauma of war in a quiet and subtle way. what can go wrong" and then somehow nothing did. because he killed the role

I wanted to announce I’ve made a new Linktree! If you want to keep track of all the big creative projects I have going on in various fandoms, you can find me there! :3

Welcome to Boromir Week!

After discovering that there was Boromir Week event 10 years ago and losing sleep because I was constantly thinking about how much Boromir DESERVES to have an event dedicated to him, I decided to try and bring it back. We'll see what happens!

I can make a separate FAQ post if I get additional questions from people, but here is some info I can provide now:

What is Boromir Week? It is (will be) a week-long event where people can submit fic drabbles (100 words), ficlets (≤1000 words), one-shots, fanart, gifs, moodboards, and headcanons set to prompts that highlight the awesomeness that is Boromir.

When is Boromir Week? It will run June 14-20, 2025. The original event, which was held in 2014 and 2015, ran the last week of March, but that is cutting it VERY close. I chose these dates in June because, in canon, June 19th is when Boromir and Faramir have the dream about the riddle, and June 20th is the attack on Osgiliath and the official start of the War of the Ring. I'm weird about calendars.

What is allowed for Boromir Week? As mentioned above, fanfiction, fanart, gifs, moodboards, and headcanons about Boromir that are tied to any of the day's prompts are allowed. Please tag any ships and/or triggers, and place NSFW/graphic submissions under a "Read More" and tag as such.

What is NOT allowed for Boromir Week? Anything created using AI. This event is intended to show Boromir in a positive light and show our appreciation for the character, so anything that is blatantly anti-Boromir is strongly discouraged. Submitting an AU where Boromir succeeded in obtaining the One Ring or writing a Dark!Boromir AU is different (and hot, let's be real). This also applies to commenting on submissions. Don't like, don't read. Don't yuck on someone else's yum. Ship and let ship. Please keep your comments respectful.

How do I submit posts for Boromir Week? The main tags I will be using will be #Boromir Week and #Boromir Week 2025. However, Tumblr's tag search is pretty much useless, not only showing results that have nothing to do with what you searched for, but also omitting a lot of results. So, the best way for me to know that you've posted is to tag @/boromir-week (without the slash). Depending on how many people participate, I may reblog your submissions as soon as I get home from work (on week days during the event) or it might be the following day.

Who is running this shindig? Hi, I'm @lucifers-legions! I write fanfiction, have way too many OCs, make moodboards (it's therapeutic), and simp over Gondor and Rohan blorbos. I started writing Boromir fanfiction in 2012 and have been obsessed with him ever since. I'm still trying to figure out this whole event mod thing, so please be patient with me, and thank you in advance for your understanding.

What are the prompts for this event? Day 1: Brother of Faramir, Childhood, Protector and Teacher

Day 2: Son of Finduilas, Maternal Family, Grief and Loss

Day 3: Son of Denethor, Paternal Family, Thorongil

Day 4: Teen Years, Captain of Gondor, Friend of Rohan

Day 5: The People's Prince, Rivendell, Member of the Fellowship

Day 6: Change of Fate, Fourth Age, Alternate Universe

Day 7: Freeform
