Park Ranger Stuff:

Hi! I just wanted to thank you for the post you made a while ago about working as a seasonal park ranger for the NPSโ€”with your advice and inspiration, I just got hired to lead cave tours at a national monument this summer! I would never have realized this was a possibility without you, so I'm truly grateful that you shared your wisdom here on tumblr. I hope you have a great week!

omg stooOOOOPPPP this has literally made my DECADE. CONGRATULATIONS!!! I'm so thrilled for you!! Like, it's taken me an hour to reply to this because I've been floating so high about it. Truly, truly, I'm so glad you found the info helpful. Thank you for sharing your success with me--it means so much, both in general and at this particular moment.

I'm not going to bring the mood down with details and drudgery, but obviously life in the Park Service is pretty bleak right now. It really says a lot about your skills and the strength of your application that you were hired during a period of time in which literally everything is working against you. I hope you have an amazing season and that it leads to great things. Congratulations a hundred times over. Enjoy that badge.

(Here is the original post, if anyone is interested. Applications typically open in the fall for the following summer season, but it's worth checking periodically, because sometimes things open up. And this year could be very weird, with some hiring freezes still in place---parks may lose qualified applicants and thus have last-minute spaces to fill. They'll often post about these openings on social media, too.)

[transcript: A text thread reading "Centaurs have hands, right? I have a comment from one of my copyeditors in my manuscript that centaurs don't have hands but like... They objectively do. Right? Am I crazy?

Like these are centaurs and they have hands"

Followed by a gif of Disney's "Fantasia"

Followed by a screenshot of the manuscript comments:

Editor: "Centaurs don't have hands. Okay left for the reader to imagine the logistics?"

My reply: "Centaurs... Do have hands?"

Followed by a drawing of a classical centaur]

if you finished the hornblower books and the sharpe series, and havent read it already, i can heartily recommend the Aubrey/Maturin series of books, and the accompanying movie "Master and Commander: Far Side of The World (2003)"

Oh, 100%, I love the Aubreyad, though for some reason M&C never developed the same chokehold over me as Hornblower. When I first saw it, it was largely for Billy Boyd reasons, but it's still one of my comfort movies and, I think, one of the best cinematic depictions of the age of sail. And to be perfectly transparent, I've only read two Hornblower books. I have read all seven hundred Sharpe books but I maintain that it wasn't my fault.

Every time I tried to write today my phone would buzz with a new message about a colleague who's been indiscriminately fired, so here's some junk food of Boromir re-entering Minas Tirith after the battle of the Black Gate

my half of an art trade with the amazing @emilybeemartin โ€” here's Colm, from her trilogy Creatures of Light! ...from longstanding tradition, we know full well that I will always be found drawing the most melancholic boatsguy you have on hand.

Look at that melancholic boat man! Sad wet sailor boy!! A walking tragedy!!! Thank you @chiropteracupola!!!!! I knew your style would be perfect for Colm, and it IS

Nell O'Dell Hates Quests concepts I sent to my design team a few weeks ago to give them a sense of what was in my brain for cover/interior illustrations.

Also, I got word from my editor that we're slated for May 2026! That'll be exactly TEN YEARS since I debuted with Woodwalker!

Welcome to Boromir Week!

After discovering that there was Boromir Week event 10 years ago and losing sleep because I was constantly thinking about how much Boromir DESERVES to have an event dedicated to him, I decided to try and bring it back. We'll see what happens!

I can make a separate FAQ post if I get additional questions from people, but here is some info I can provide now:

What is Boromir Week? It is (will be) a week-long event where people can submit fic drabbles (100 words), ficlets (โ‰ค1000 words), one-shots, fanart, gifs, moodboards, and headcanons set to prompts that highlight the awesomeness that is Boromir.

When is Boromir Week? It will run June 14-20, 2025. The original event, which was held in 2014 and 2015, ran the last week of March, but that is cutting it VERY close. I chose these dates in June because, in canon, June 19th is when Boromir and Faramir have the dream about the riddle, and June 20th is the attack on Osgiliath and the official start of the War of the Ring. I'm weird about calendars.

What is allowed for Boromir Week? As mentioned above, fanfiction, fanart, gifs, moodboards, and headcanons about Boromir that are tied to any of the day's prompts are allowed. Please tag any ships and/or triggers, and place NSFW/graphic submissions under a "Read More" and tag as such.

What is NOT allowed for Boromir Week? Anything created using AI. This event is intended to show Boromir in a positive light and show our appreciation for the character, so anything that is blatantly anti-Boromir is strongly discouraged. Submitting an AU where Boromir succeeded in obtaining the One Ring or writing a Dark!Boromir AU is different (and hot, let's be real). This also applies to commenting on submissions. Don't like, don't read. Don't yuck on someone else's yum. Ship and let ship. Please keep your comments respectful.

How do I submit posts for Boromir Week? The main tags I will be using will be #Boromir Week and #Boromir Week 2025. However, Tumblr's tag search is pretty much useless, not only showing results that have nothing to do with what you searched for, but also omitting a lot of results. So, the best way for me to know that you've posted is to tag @/boromir-week (without the slash). Depending on how many people participate, I may reblog your submissions as soon as I get home from work (on week days during the event) or it might be the following day.

Who is running this shindig? Hi, I'm @lucifers-legions! I write fanfiction, have way too many OCs, make moodboards (it's therapeutic), and simp over Gondor and Rohan blorbos. I started writing Boromir fanfiction in 2012 and have been obsessed with him ever since. I'm still trying to figure out this whole event mod thing, so please be patient with me, and thank you in advance for your understanding.

What are the prompts for this event? Day 1: Brother of Faramir, Childhood, Protector and Teacher

Day 2: Son of Finduilas, Maternal Family, Grief and Loss

Day 3: Son of Denethor, Paternal Family, Thorongil

Day 4: Teen Years, Captain of Gondor, Friend of Rohan

Day 5: The People's Prince, Rivendell, Member of the Fellowship

Day 6: Change of Fate, Fourth Age, Alternate Universe

Day 7: Freeform

I just sent a new manuscript to my agent! It's always such a good feeling to boot a manuscript out the door and into the submission process. After my two epic fantasy series and middle-grade picture book, this is my first middle-grade novel, and I had tons of fun writing it. It dove right back down to my roots--- magical quests, mysterious artifacts, dragons, goblins, trolls, undead cats. Okay, just the one undead cat.

Very stoked at the progress on NELL O'DELL HATES QUESTS--- I turned in the second round of revisions to my editor last week and just got feedback from the design team on the cover illustration. Spring 20266666!

2014-2024 Redraw

Woah, I wanted to post this like 4 weeks ago but my life has been a farcical hamster wheel since late November. Nevertheless, here's my annual ten-year redraw!

2014:

2024:

This was an intimidating one to redraw, because the 2014 version was a breakthrough for me in terms of style and atmosphere. Despite the heavy-handed, high-contrast details, it was actually the first piece where I managed to put less on the image and feel like I succeeded, especially with the background. I wasn't sure a redraw would look all that different, which just goes to show why redraws can be a valuable, illuminating exercise. My Legolas has stayed mostly constant for about twenty years now, but man, Aragorn has gotten real tired.

2025 is going to be an exciting redraw year---2015 was the year I signed with my agent for Woodwalker, so for the first time, my redraws are going to start being my own characters from my own novels, what!

Obligatory holiday shopping post (I promise this is the only one). I have more products to offer than ever this year--- take a look and see if any would fit on your gift lists. Links below---remember to shop small whenever you can!

The Bee's Knees Toys and Books (great if you want me to sign or personalize a book!)

Emily B. Martin on Bookshop.org (great for supporting whatever local indie seller you want!)

Emily B. Martin on INPRNT (watercolors & some digital prints)

Emily B. Martin on Redbubble (all the weird LotR merch they haven't taken down yet)

www.emilybmartin.net (when in doubt)

Little mantelpiece refresh! I've had this linocut look in mind for months but haven't been able to find the exact images in my head, so I faked them myself digitally. They're all southern Appalachia species I see in my yard:

Anole + red clover

White-tail deer and magnolia

Carolina wren + sassafras

Barred owl + dogwood

Black rat snake + Christmas ferns

Tiger swallowtail + tulip poplar

These are all available as prints in my INPRNT shop, along with many of my watercolors!
