It is followed by a list of fifteenth- and sixteenth-centuries editions and extant copies.
Nel corso dei cinque anni del suo svolgimento, il progetto 15cBOOKTRADE, finanziato con un Consol... more Nel corso dei cinque anni del suo svolgimento, il progetto 15cBOOKTRADE, finanziato con un Consolidator Grant dello European Research Council (2014-2019) ha favorito il consolidamento e l’espansione di una serie di strumenti digitali e di una ampia rete di collaborazione tra individui, istituzioni e progetti di ricerca incentrati sull’utilizzo degli incunaboli, e più in generale del libro antico a stampa, come fonte storica. Dopo la conclusione ufficiale progetto, il lavoro dei membri e della rete di studiosi e bibliotecari costituita durante i cinque anni della durata del finanziamento è continuato. Singoli ricercatori o gruppi di ricerca hanno orientato le proprie indagini verso categorie ben precise di libri antichi a stampa: edizioni di testi di diritto, di materia medica, edizioni illustrate, collezioni di alcuni possessori antichi, biblioteche monastiche, censimenti illustrati, e così via. Vari tra questi progetti hanno esteso il limite cronologico dell’interesse di ricerca oltre il dicembre 1500, assottigliando la convenzionale distinzione tra incunaboli e post-incunaboli. Di fatto però, la metodologia per tutte queste nuove strade di ricerca resta basata sull’utilizzo delle informazioni di provenienza come dati storici; sull’integrazione di fonti bibliografiche e documentarie allo scopo di arricchire ulteriormente il dato materiale; sulla creazione di collaborazioni internazionali di ampio respiro che consentano di raccogliere dati che difficilmente sarebbero accessibili altrimenti (specialmente in questi anni difficili di pandemia); infine, sull’utilizzo di strumenti digitali efficaci per facilitare la raccolta dei dati e l’accesso agli stessi. Il presente contributo fornisce una panoramica sullo stato attuale di questi progetti e propone una serie di riflessioni sui benefici e sulle sfide connessi alla creazione di un ecosistema digitale per lo studio del libro antico a stampa, una necessità di recente condivisa anche dall’ICCU, quale soluzione intelligente e sostenibile.

The essay offers the analysis of a variety of subjects, prices, sales, customers, and comparison with the cost of living in Renaissance Venice, the largest place of production and distribution in 15th-century Europe. The focus is first and foremost on the cheapest and most popular items, a production and trade enabled by the new technology.

The volume contains a reassessment of the economic and social impact of the printing revolution o... more The volume contains a reassessment of the economic and social impact of the printing revolution on the development of early modern European society, using 15th-century printed books, which still survive today in their thousands, as historical sources. Papers on production, trade, the cost of books in comparison with the cost of living, literacy, the transmission of texts in print, and the use and circulation of books and illustration are the result of several years of international, collaborative, and multidisciplinary research coordinated by the 15cBOOKTRADE project funded by an ERC Consolidator grant (2014-2019) and supported by the Consortium of European Research Libraries.

The post-Tridentine period and its liturgical book production provided the perfect environment fo... more The post-Tridentine period and its liturgical book production provided the perfect environment for cultural exchange and fierce competition between publishers. In this context, I will focus on the production of missals by Christopher Plantin and Lucantonio Giunta pointing out the similarities found in the typographic style and general outlook of their imprints.
By way of the actual artefacts and the available documentation I will show how the Roman typography Plantin chose for his early production, and how it influenced the outlook of some of the late editions printed by Lucantonio Giunta in Venice.
The goal of my paper is to point out how the inner characteristics and graphic evolution of both productions were influenced by a rich context of silent cultural and commercial transnational exchange that, crossing borders, shaped books.
