Cet article propose de comparer la contemplation esthétique, l’expérience psychédélique et l’hypn... more Cet article propose de comparer la contemplation esthétique, l’expérience psychédélique et l’hypnose, telles qu’elles sont étudiées par les neurosciences cognitives, évoquées dans les réflexions littéraires et philosophiques de James Joyce, William James et Aldous Huxley, et mises en jeu dans les quelques dispositifs artistiques qui nous serviront d’exemples. Nous verrons que ces trois états modifiés de conscience libèrent la perception des exigences de l’action utile. Une partie de leur attrait provient peut-être de ce découplage.

Ces formes sont porteuses d’états sensori-moteurs, et modulent notre expérience immersive des espaces que le texte évoque, proposant des manières de les habiter marquées par les normes de genre. À partir des propos de Hemingway concernant Henry James, qui mettent en scène une performance camp de la masculinité, et d’extraits de The Sun Also Rises (1926) et de The Aspern Papers (1888), nous explorerons les liens entre parole intérieure, immersion spatiale et corps genré.

How does Joyce's writing formulate such an invitation? And how does the reader's neurophysiological, imitative body respond to it? It is through a neuroaesthetic conception of reading as an embodied performance relying on empathic resonance and sensorimotor simulation that I propose to explore how the Joycean text reconfigures the reader’s sensorimotor experience.

El presente artículo explora dicha cuestión a partir de una serie de investigaciones desarrolladas a lo largo de las últimas décadas en el ámbito de las neurociencias en torno a la cognición encarnada y los estados alterados de consciencia. A partir de las investigaciones mencionadas, trataremos de comprender mejor los procesos que dan lugar a la inmersión del lector en determinadas descripciones presentes en Des anges mineurs (1999) y Terminus Radieux (2014), de Antoine Volodine. Este modelo neuroestético de la experiencia inmersiva del entorno estará respaldado por una reinterpretación de la distinción narratológica entre descripción y narración. Observaremos de este modo que la inmersión encarnada puede dotar de un alto grado de soberanía a la práctica estética

In this article, we investigate how "authentic life" is constituted through the imposition of a n... more In this article, we investigate how "authentic life" is constituted through the imposition of a normative style of consciousness, which literary and psychotropic practices contest. We carry out this investigation by focusing more specifically on hallucinogenic compounds and on William S. Burroughs's The Wild Boys. This comparative analysis is built on the Platonic notion of the pharmakon, and on discussions of the neurophysiological specificities of psychedelics and literature. We conclude by observing the pharmacological effects of Burroughs's use of ekphrasis, as it disrupts habitual, sequential consciousness and frees sensation and desire from the normative constraints of modern production and reproduction.

This article is an attempt to link together the notions of representation and immersion within an... more This article is an attempt to link together the notions of representation and immersion within an interdisciplinary framework combining neuroscience, literary studies, and philosophy. What is representation? Can we define its mode of existence and describe its natural habitat? Does it live on the page of a novel, in the brain's circumvolutions, or in-between? Is it possible to intensify our experience of representation through immersive reading? How can we reach such immersive altered state of consciousness? What are its ethical and ecological implications? These are the questions we will be addressing in the following pages, in which we will first explore the neurophysiological conditions of immersive embodied reading, before considering its opposition to the productive, in-control cognitive styles promoted by our rationalist modernity.

Quels impacts cette forme d’art, native d’un milieu technique marqué par l’informatique, a sur notre manière d’appréhender le texte littéraire, de faire l’expérience du récit et de la fiction au XXIe siècle ? Nous interrogeons ces impacts en explorant le genre de la fantasy, que partagent le jeu vidéo de rôle et la forme romanesque, et qui définit une matrice d’influence s’organisant autour d’un principe esthétique, celui de l’exploration et de l'habitation d’univers secondaires, que rend possible l'immersion environnementale. Nous verrons notamment que la fantasy tend à libérer la description des exigences de la narration et à ménager des espaces de souveraineté au spectacle environnemental.

Burroughs' The Wild Boys-A Book of the Dead (1971), showing how literature, by cutting up narrative structures and syntactical units, can fight the language virus' configuring of human vitality, just like bacteria uses CRISPR-Cas9 to cut-up the DNA code-chains of threatening viruses. We will see that, supported by the shared biosemiotic nature of literary texts and biological forms, this parallel extends beyond the metaphorical to reinsert literature within the realm of living processes. Cet article propose une lecture biosémiotique du roman de William S. Burroughs The Wild Boys-A Book of the Dead (1971), montrant comment la littérature, en coupant structures narratives et unités syntaxiques, peut combattre le "virus du langage" et les contraintes qu'il impose à la vitalité humaine. Cette tactique rappelle la manière dont certaines bactéries utilisent le CRISPR-Cas9 pour couper l'ADN de virus attaquants. Nous verrons que, en raison du caractère biosémiotique que partagent les textes littéraires et les formes biologiques, ce parallèle nous permet de réinsérer la littérature au sein des dynamiques du vivant.

In this essay, we propose to investigate its ecological and biological dimensions, tracing them back to Vernadsky’s concept of biosphere and to Lotman’s environmental vision of art articulated in his foundational monograph, The Structure of the Artistic Text. Such investigation shows how the biosemiotic undercurrents in Lotmanian thought allow the emergence of a cyclical, homeostatic model of culture that counterbalances his modernist vision of art as a force working for unquestioned linear progress.

Cet article vise à comprendre cet apport en situant ce paradigme au sein d’une brève histoire intellectuelle, avant de le mettre en relation avec des développements phénoménologique (Merleau-Ponty, Jean-Luc Petit) et psychologiques (Meunier) qui nous permettent de penser le rôle de l’empathie dans la lecture littéraire et, de manière plus générale, dans l’inscription corporelle du sens. Il explore notamment les liens étroits qu’entre- tient la lecture empathique avec la « compréhension érotique » et le mimétisme.

Writers and readers of literature are, among other things, biological entities that evolve under ... more Writers and readers of literature are, among other things, biological entities that evolve under particular political (geographical/historical) conditions. A comparative study of certain texts by Martin Heidegger (1889–1976) can help us establish a fruitful interpretation of this threefold link between literary art, biology and politics. However, careful analysis reveals that Heidegger remains too rooted in an old-world, nationalistic and anthropocentric paradigm. We will attempt to rethink Heidegger’s assumptions on the grounds that literature, a cultural practice, enables us to delineate our natural environment. By reformulating Heidegger’s line of thought, we can more precisely address the plural structure of our biotic and political-literary experiences.

The object of our paper is to examine how wine-related knowledge and practices play an important ... more The object of our paper is to examine how wine-related knowledge and practices play an important role in determining the respective flavour experiences of novice wine drinkers and sommeliers. We defend the idea that sensation is informed by knowledge, as it circulates in a cultural environment. Biosemiotics has developed appropriate concepts helping us understand how the same wine can generate diverging experiences. Within a biosemiotic framework, we consider wine flavours as relational, semiosic experiences produced by the convergence of sensory-discriminative, motivational-affective and cognitive-evaluative factors. Drawing from fundamental biosemiotics we argue that these factors vary according to the creature and its simultaneously biological and cultural umwelt. We conclude by examining a series of empirical studies consolidating the idea that sensation is informed by knowledge and language.

Neuropsychologie, phénoménologie, études culturelles, théories de la fiction et pensée de la littérature sont ici convoquées pour répondre à cette question intrigante, au fil d’un parcours qui nous mène à la rencontre des œuvres de Dennis Copper, James Frey, Chuck Palahniuk et Mark Z. Danielewski. À travers ces œuvres marquantes de la littérature américaine contemporaine se développe une enquête sur les ramifications neurophysiologiques de la lecture et sur le rôle de l’empathie en son sein, une enquête qui, en mettant l’accent sur l’expérience de la littérature plutôt que sur son interprétation, revalorise l’immersion et ouvre sur une conception renouvelée des pratiques artistiques au début du XXIe siècle.

Why does his fiction and non-fiction continue to raise enthusiasm among an ever-growing variety of readers of all ages and backgrounds not only in the English-speaking countries but all over the world, while describing all the malcontents, dead ends and solipsistic tendencies of contemporary civilization? Presences of the Other counteracts the vision of Wallace’s postmodern oeuvre as selfishly self-absorbed, narcissistic or confining and attempts to answer the question of its appeal by addressing it as ‘an open work’, following Umberto Eco’s definition of great texts. Epitomized in the missing questions of Brief Interviews; in the endnotes of Infinite Jest that entice readers into fertile wanderings; or in The Pale King demands for active editing and creative involvement, DFW’s paradoxically difficult and impenetrable work opens up and allows for limitless interventions and participations. By becoming a playground for interpretation, his work reveals itself as an exercise in care. Indeterminate and inconclusive, constructed on Derridean ‘difference’, DFW’s output testifies to the presence of a liberating symbolic Other; by resisting closure, it promotes both a fundamental reworking of the literary tradition and a compassionate vision of the human condition. Prominent scholars explore varieties of otherness in Wallace’s ‘open work’ by engaging with the dialogue his writing establishes with non-literary discourses such as cinema (French Nouvelle Vague), music (rap, in Signifying Rappers), religion (Buddhism) and philosophy (Wittgenstein). Critical approaches to the author’s protean identity, taste for masquerade and performance, and capacity for metamorphosis and transformation, foreground traces of an otherness that sets out a salutary spiritual potential for the 21st century.
