Architectural Remains of the Reigns of Elizabeth and James I', C.J. Richardson (1840) Elizabethan architecture indulged in geometrical ornament. However, it is often quite difficult to appreciate this. Houses like Burghley and Hardwick, or the Triangular Lodge, Rushton, have masses of fine decoration at roof level, creating spiky profiles. Rarely do we have the opportunity to inspect this: unlike Elizabethan courtiers, we don’t promenade on the roofs. While not common, wattle and daub houses did not have to be whitewashed. Wattle and daub were a fairly inexpensive way to build homes from the early Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The walls between the large timbers of a structure were made of wattle (sticks woven in a loose pattern) and daub (a mixture of mud, straw and animal manure that was packed onto the wattle) then covered in plaster.
