Home Office IKEA Hack Using HAVSTA Cabinets and BILLY Bookcases

This IKEA hack is perfect for 8 foot or 9 foot ceilings. The total combination of HAVSTA and BILLY bookcases used here comes to 94.5 inches. Add a bit of trim at the top to touch the ceiling and you have the look of custom built-in bookcases for much less!

IKEA PIECES:
4 HAVSTAS,
8 billy extenders
8 short billys

All secured to studs in the wall and each other.

My ceilings are 9 ft. I had to build my own base because using the HAVSTA base would’ve been too tall. If you have 8 ft ceilings, you can buy the HAVSTA with the base and skip the extenders.

You gotta flip that Billy upside down. That’s a key ingredient to get a taller crown molding at the top.

I added extra trim to have it look more custom and seamless. Lots of caulk, wood filled and bins primer shellac too.

I wanted it to look like a big piece of furniture so I did not add pieces to fill in the gaps on the side. This combo allowed the shelves to go to the ceiling (we have 9ft. ceilings so we had to cut them down about 9in). Next we added a connecting shelf with plywood and lattice trim. After caulking and using spackle to fill the miiiillions of holes, I sanded and primed the cabinets for paint.
