I always make sure to wait until the paint I’ll be lettering over is dry, so that I can keep wiping off my mistakes! I find it helpful to faintly paint in some guidelines. These can be carefully wiped away when you’re done. On the spine of the book, especially on older books, be sure that the guide lines follow any gentle curves. Resist the temptation to straighten out the forms of the book. Part of the charm of old books is their irregular proportions resulting from years of use. I find that the best way to represent the edges of the pages is to roughly scumble dryish paint and then to pick out a few individual pages. Painting just a few will suffice.
