Burying your tomato stems like this will encourage better root systems and stronger plants. I plant on both sides of my trellis, one plant for each post. 1. Dig a hole in the center of the trellis at each post 2. The hole should be angled, becoming shallower as it reaches the post 3. Place the tomato seedling in so that it lays almost horizontal on the ground 4. Snip off any branches below the soil level 5. Fill in the hole 6. Wait one or two days for the tomato plant to turn itself toward the sky. Tie it (gently) to the post. I like to use strips of soft fabric like from a t-shirt. Happy planting, friends!" Joanna Brown 🌸 Your new gardening friend! on Instagram: "Add vertical growing space to your garden with a trellis. Here we use cattle panels to create a simple and inexpensive arch trellis in our raised bed garden.

Materials needed: cattle panels, t-posts, zip ties
1️⃣: Pound t-posts into the ground
2️⃣: Shape the panel into an arch and set inside of t-posts. The tension from the bend will keep the panel in place.
3️⃣: Secure by using zip ties wrapped around both the t-post and cattle panel wire.
4️⃣: Plant climbing vegetables and watch them grow! Cucumbers, Beans, Indeterminate Tomatoes, Melons, and Vining Squash are all great options. 🥒🍅🫛

The single leader string tomato trellis is definitely the cheapest when it comes to materials, give that you have something to attach to. I like to do this for my earliest tomatoes due to the high air flow and low disease pressure. The single leader tends to produce earlier as well as the plant doesn’t have to support all the suckers! Full pros and cons down below 👇

Advantages:
Cheap, pennies in string/twine
Higher Airflow = Less Disease which is great for early season
No Suckers = Earlier + Larger Tomatoes
Denser planting for more variety, since they are pruned you can plant tighter

Disadvantages:
Lower Overall Harvest w/o Suckers
High Maintenance Due To Pruning
If Not Maintained It Becomes Floppy FAST

Seattle Urban Farm Co | Garden Creators on Instagram: "We planted a row of 6 cherry tomatoes on this trellis in early May. We’re growing them on vertical strings and we like to wrap the stems around the twine about once a week as the plants grow. If you wrap the new growth when it’s still fresh and pliable, you won’t break any stems and you can easily train your tomatoes on strings even though they don’t have any tendrils and don’t wrap themselves! 🌱🍅
