@GerardM @jhsoby Can one of you give the official opinion of the Lang com?

This is a tough one. According to this there are 52 (!) different codes for Mixtec languages, so just calling this Mixtec is clearly not right. The code mix is for Mixtepec Mixtec, so if that's what this request is for, that should be OK, but as a code for all Mixtec languages mix can't be used.

@Bugreporter Is this request for all Mixtec languages or just for Mixtepec Mixtec?

Ping @Bugreporter Is this request for all Mixtec languages or just for Mixtepec Mixtec?

The sample above w:Eight_Deer_Jaguar_Claw just has "Mixtec: Iya Nacuaa Teyusi Ñaña". Maybe that's mix-und

mix-x-und

shall we define this for "undetermined Mixtec language"?

I updated the task accordingly.

Since there is only approval for mix in case of Mixtepec Mixtec and no approval for mix-und, this isn't ready to go. Still needs LangCom approval. @jhsoby @Amire80 is mix-und a good alternative for this case where it's unknown which form of Mixtec is used?

I think they gave their input and ample time to comment on the way we took in account of their review.

Addshore subscribed.

As this seemingly is still waiting for langcom approval I'm going to move it off campsite iteration board for now (it looks like it snuck on outside of our regular process anyway)

Actually, we'd need the patch first ..

Nikki subscribed.

@jhsoby already said that mix is inappropriate because it's only Mixtepec Mixtec. Subtags make language codes more specific, so mix with any subtag still means some variety of Mixtepec Mixtec.

Which one would be applicable?

I think the discussion here becomes more complex than it should be. How many labels do we actually expect to have here? If we just start with "mix", and then we get a lot of them, can they be later divided by someone who understands these languages well?

Removing from the campsite iteration again because to me it seems that the discussion here still isn’t done.

I agree with @Amire80 on this one. What do you say @Esc3300 ?

To explain my changes on July 2: I think Nikki was right to point out that "mix-x-und" isn't appropriate, as it would have been a subgroup of "mix" and not of Mixtec languages. As jhsoby mentioned "mix" is just for "Mixtepec Mixtec", not any Mixtec language. There are dozens of other three-letter codes for these. All Mixtec languages seem to be included in "Oto-Manguean languages" ("omq"), thus the request for "omq-x-mixtec" ("undetermined Mixtec language"). We could use "mis" (because we haven't created the code) or "und" (because the exact code is undetermined) for the same, but a distinct code might make it easier to handle them later on. The "-x-" sequence introduces a use specific to Wikibase/WMF.

From a practical side, given that it may be a continuum of primarily spoken languages and the classification into dozens of codes may not be entirely certain nor stable, it might not be easy or useful to determine the current code for a Mixtec name (or other word). As the new code in Wikibase/MW is to start collecting names with monolingual text properties, we don't really know beforehand how many there will be.

I don't think either code should be made available for labels. If you want to create the code "mix" for "Mixtepec Mixtec" as well, I don't mind.

@Amire80 @jhsoby @Esc3300 @Nikki Could you please reach an agreement on what the desired language code is going to be? I'll make a new patch then.

We could shorten the label for the code omq-x-mixtec to "Mixtec" or "Mixtec languages"

I shortened it to "Mixtec"

If there is nothing to add, let's proceed
