Phase out #wikimedia-quibble IRC channel in favor of #wikimedia-releng
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

We have created the #wikimedia-quibble IRC channel for Quibble in 2021 (T286770) with the intention to facilitate exchanges about it.

@Krinkle had wikibugs to also relay messages to #wikimedia-releng (gerrit-channel: Include integration/quibble in #wikimedia-releng).

Given the channel barely has any discussion and notifications are already in releng, I suggest to redirect the channel to #wikimedia-releng.

wikibugs2, wm-bot would need to be adjusted.

wm-bot2 and wmopbot are managed by IRC volunteer ops in #wikimedia-ops to manage channel rights and I guess they can set the redirection.

Steps thanks to @Peachey88 on T346901#9193323:

  • wmopbot can be parted with !part by any of the ops in #wikimedia-ops
  • The channel can then be redirect with the normal channel modes for on the access list with the appropriate rights.

wmopbot can be parted with !part by any of the ops in #wikimedia-ops

ircservserv can be cleaned up with a appropriate patchset.

wm-bot can be parted by by the wm-both channel admin or a global admin - https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wm-bot#@part

The channel can then be redirect with the normal channel modes for on the access list with the appropriate rights.

Sounds like we need to contact folks still in the channel + IRC operators to close it.

Change 967133 had a related patch set uploaded (by Hashar; author: Hashar):

[labs/tools/wikibugs2@master] Remove #wikimedia-quibble (already in #wikimedia-releng)

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/967133

There is still some bots (ircservserv-wm, wm-bot2, wmopbot) and we need redirect to #wikimedia-releng.

hashar updated the task description. (Show Details)

The ircservserv-wm is no more configured, I just had to kick it from the channel.

I have tried to set the redirect but that fails:

<hashar> SET #wikimedia-quibble MLOCK +f #wikimedia-releng
<ChanServ> Invalid value #wikimedia-releng for mode +f.

Presumably because I am not op on the destination channel:

<hashar> OP #wikimedia-releng
<ChanServ> You are not authorized to perform this operation.

https://libera.chat/guides/channelmodes states:

f forward
An operator can set /mode +f #channel2 only if they are an op in #channel2 or if #channel2 has mode +F set (see below).

The list of user flags can be obtained via:

/msg ChanServ flags #wikimedia-releng

@brennen has +o on both channels so he should be able to run:

/msg ChanServ SET #wikimedia-quibble MLOCK +f #wikimedia-releng

I get a You are not authorized to perform this operation. Have not really investigated deeply here...

@brennen Were you opped in #wikimedia-releng when you tried? You probably need to be opped to set this.

Oh, good call - I'll try that and give it another shot momentarily.

Tyler Brennen and I jumped in a video call and tried setting up a limit to enable the forwarding. We claimed ourselves defeated and opted to instead delete the channel entirely. Given all bots got removed I went to do:

/msg DROP #wikimedia-quibble

Which asked for a confirmation and the channel is now gone!

Note Taavi went to ask wmopbot to part the channel before I destroyed it.
