Kirsty Kash on Instagram: "Smooth gradients can be tricky to achieve with underglazes because they don’t look the same after firing as they do straight out of the jar!! Here are a few things I’ve figured out over the years: 1. Avoid applying layers of colour in straight lines. When the bands of colour flow up and down organically with your design the gradient will appear smoother. 2. I rarely use a pure colour straight out of the jar. Introduce a little bit of the next colour from the beginning so that the shift will be more subtle. Amaco’s Velvet underglazes are my favourite because they mix so well and the colours are so vibrant! 3. Some pigments are shy and others take over! Find colours that have a similar intensity so that you can blend them easily. Juliette’s Wheelhouse on Instagram: "Working on some new swirly mugs. Here’s a little clip of how I make my messy little sgraffito swirls. It’s nice sometimes to break away from the very tight and precise carving I do in my other designs and be able to loosely “sketch” with my @diamondcoretools L1 Diamond Stylus Tool. As you can see I’m barely putting any pressure on the tool because I don’t want a hard line. I’m sketching with it instead of carving. - I use a white prismacolor pencil to sketch out the circles over the Amaco Velvet underglaze. My cup is still stiff leather hard.
