Quest'articolo esamina il ruolo della città nel processo di costruzione dell'identità collettiva, in particolare analizzando come lo spazio urbano-nella sua produzione, esperienza, rappresentazione, appropriazione e reinterpretazione-rappresenti una componente fondamentale dei processi di negoziazione identitaria attraverso cui una società avanza ed evolve. L'analisi è incentrata sulla città di Diyarbakır, nell'Anatolia sudorientale, capitale informale del Kurdistan, dove lo stato turco e l'identità ufficiale da esso promossa si scontrano con movimenti sociali che si oppongono al discorso egemonico riproponendosi come curdi.

With its emphasis on the collective, open character of the design process, community architecture practice has been challenging the methodological tenets and disciplinary boundaries of architecture, shifting the focus from a merely physical output towards a remaking of sociopolitical relations, knowledge production and transmission, people’s capacity and self-organization. Community architecture is, in short, about the practical reformulating interaction between the terms that make up the concept: community and architecture. 
When practicing community architecture we are positioning ourselves, as individuals and kind-of-architects, alongside a social construct we refer to as “community”. Such concept is subject to various actual interpretations: as community architects we may find ourselves engaging with overlapping entities, at times in friction, that share a common physical space and are all, one way or another, the community. 
This emerges well in an ancient, stratified and heterogeneous locality such as Nangloeng, a community in central Bangkok where I have been working for some time as part of community architecture group Openspace. This brief account aims to provide some cues for reflection on the actual meanings of “community” on the ground, and the role community architects can play bridging across such meanings.

The historical development of Istanbul’s gecekondu areas (informally-originated
neighborhoods) can be broadly interpreted as a progression toward the center
and subsequent re-peripheralization, both in sociopolitical terms and in actual
urban geography. While Istanbul emerged in recent decades as a magnet for
transnational migrants and for capitals pouring into the debt-fueled real estate
sector, many such neighborhoods have been targeted by speculative sociospatial restructuring projects, while also absorbing much of the migratory
influx. The recent economic crisis plunged these urban redevelopment sites
into a deadlock, generating a fragmented urbanscape in which multiple layers
of uncertainty, suspension, and informalization overlap and interact. This
chapter explores the unfolding transformation in Fikirtepe, the largest ongoing
redevelopment project in the city, which has seen its social and urban fabric torn
apart by the redevelopment and is currently stuck in an unstable but protracted
limbo. As Fikirtepe becomes “unlivable” for many of its long-time dwellers,
a number of migrants are moving in, etching out a living: a collateral effect of
redevelopment failure, creating a space of opportunity for new disenfranchised
populations with varied backgrounds, legal statuses, and life trajectories. Within
this setting, this chapter analyzes the periphery as a condition that is articulated,
reproduced, and transformed through embodied practices. With their practices,
narratives, and trajectories, those who inhabit such botched urban transformation
embody different layers of the periphery, contributing to shape an understanding
of it as a perspectival condition with a polyvalent spatiality and temporality.

This brief essay discusses the relation between resilience and the periphery, exploring how the widespread narrative on urban resilience, and its associated interventions, impact metropolitan peripheries in the so called Global South. More specifically, the paper examines how the construction of urban resilience is operationalized and contested by both governmental actors, civil society, and local communities across three South-East Asian urban centres: Jakarta, Bangkok, and Manila. In these expanding risk-prone megacities, urban vulnerability is exacerbated by climate change and poses increasingly relevant challenges, disproportionately affecting urban poor informal communities. Within this context the discourse over resilience, far from being just a technical issue, intertwines with political questions of socio-spatial justice and is often deployed in selective and biased ways, to justify slum clearance and the displacement of the urban poor. There are, however, innovative examples of community-based practices which contest this narrative, by advocating for their right to be considered a legitimate part of the city and to play an active role in its socioecological system. These examples indicate other possible routes towards urban resilience.

Questo catalogo raccoglie un’esperienza didattica e di ricerca coordinata da Cherubino Gambardella con la partecipazione di docenti italiani di rilievo internazionale quali Franco Purini, Orazio Carpenzano e Antonino Saggio e supportata dal contributo di due dottori di ricerca della Seconda Università di Napoli, Maria Gelvi e Concetta Tavoletta. Si tratta degli esiti di un workshop tenuto presso l’università di Roma “La Sapienza” in cui dieci dottorandi di ricerca hanno elaborato altrettante proposte progettuali per illustrare le possibilità di alterazione immaginifica di un conclamato monumento del moderno qual è la casa di Curzio Malaparte a Capri. Questo lavoro è il catalogo di una mostra e costituisce l’anteprima di una futura pubblicazione più esaustiva.

Tre saggi caratterizzano il volume. Il primo è di Giovanna De Sanctis Ricciardone, una personalità che ha attraversato gli ultimi cinquant’anni di lavoro nella città di Roma nel campo dell’architettura, della politica e dell’arte. Il secondo è di Luigi Franciosini che rappresenta una figura di spicco nel rapporto tra stratificazioni storiche e progettazione architettonica. Il terzo è di Antonino Saggio, studioso dei rapporti tra informatica e architettura e coordinatore del Dottorato di ricerca in Architettura - Teoria e Progetto. I diversi saggi illuminano con angolature diverse e personali alcuni aspetti della progettazione contemporanea. Undici architetti iscritti al Dottorato intessono relazioni tra il proprio lavoro e le tematiche illustrate.
“Roma Cosmo Materia Cultura” fornisce in definitiva un’apertura non convenzionale, ma ricca di spunti e tematiche molto pertinenti in particolare alla città di Roma, alla sua storia e ai sui suoi sviluppi futuri.

Una prima risposta ai temi tra architettura e migrazione è stata data dal Workshop “Architecture & Refugees”1, che si è svolto a Roma nel febbraio scorso, promosso da Domizia Mandolesi e Alessandra De Cesaris, responsabili di HousingLab - DiAP, e dalla Facoltà di Architettura della Sapienza Università di Roma, con Emergency Architecture & Human Rights, Denmark e la partecipazione dei docenti Jorge Lobos e Jørgen Eskemose Andersen della Royal Danish Academy of Copenhagen KADK.

For twenty-one days eight European Academies and more than sixty-five persons - among IBA staff, professors, experts, teachers, researchers, phd students, master students - coming from four different countries, joined the international studio 2016 in Delft and Venice. It has been an incredible first step that this experimental partnership between EU Academies and IBA Parkstad achieved together. The reason is to promote innovative methods and tools for spatial planning and urban design, according to some specific issues of the ongoing Internationale Bauausstellung in the Netherlands. The aim of the international studio was, and will be, to establish a common dialogue and a shared platform of knowledge stressing the meaning and the role of regions and urban areas in cross-border european territories.

Seminario prof. N. Trasi con arch. PhD M. T. Cutrì “Architecture otherwhere. Le sfide dell’ architettura in aree di post disastri”. Il Seminario si è basato sulla necessità di riflettere sulle modalità possibili con cui l’architettura può rispondere a situazioni provocate da disastri di vario genere o limitarne i danni. Per effetto di disastri politici, sociali e naturali si è visto come architetti e forze sociali possano agire insieme sulla città. Le comunità, le imprese e le associazioni possono mettere in atto nuove strategie urbane attraverso una diversa interpretazione del rapporto uomo/territorio/città. Il Seminario, attraverso un’elaborazione teorica ed una meta-progettuale, ha prodotto un insieme di approcci interpretativi per trovare soluzioni ai disastri di ogni forma, focalizzando l’attenzione su alcune aree della Capitale. Il Seminario ha avuto come output la pubblicazione dei testi nel libro Disasters otherwhere a cura della Unione Internazionale Architetti (UIA) di Parigi.

Obiettivo Periferico nasce dalla voltontà di ampliare e divulgare la visione eterogenea che ar- ticola il ̀ legame tra periferia e quello che viene comunèmente identificato come centro citta- dino. Il tema di cio che circonda, del limite o semplicemente di cio che si dirada da un nucelo urbano, viene costantemente percepito come disgiunto da un interesse inclusivo all’interno di una più ampia visione di qualità urbana. Gli estratti collezionati in questo volume, selezionati per diversità e proposizione, sono volti all’analisi di quelle tematiche che, per importanza strategica e operativa, necessitano di essere divulgati ed approfonditi dalla comunità scientifica e ammin- istrativa. Professionisti ed esperti del settore hanno espresso una propria visione all’interno di un ampio processo di analisi necessario alla riformulazione di un’idea di periferia contemporanea. L’importanza di poter ri-concepire questi spazi come luoghi identitari, fulcro di una nuova idea di sviluppo progressista e di qualita,̀ è l’obiettivo primario da perseguire per stimolare nuovi inves- timenti e una loro crescita qualitativa. This pamphlet brings together the contributions of architects, researchers and artists from all over the world. The common ground of di- scussion is the city analyzed in its less explored “folds” becoming the ground for experi- mentation and research.
The work is divided into three parts: Theories - Report - Visions.
The three categories bring together authors who have had, in their specificity, a reading experience of the city belonging to a similar field of action.
The Theories part has a theoretical approach overlapping with an operative study of pos- sible interventions in the urban fabric; an historical analysis seems to play a key role in all theses.
The Report focuses on the residual spaces of the city; the relationship between art and architecture seems to be the solution of this spatial rebus, even if it leads to always different results.
Visions is a collection of future projections, fast images and critical readings of the city. Through drawings, photomontages and pho- tographs we tried to expose the most significant aspects of different urban situations.
These materials together do not want to give solutions but they want to ask new questions, being conscious that curisioty remains neces- sary for any kind of progress.

On the topic of Landscape, in any form, certain projects by Le Corbusier (LC) may be said to have unquestionably maintained a sense of both development and continuity with the modern era.

Projects such as the Rio de Janeiro and Algiers ones prove that certain concepts LC engaged with remain valid to this day and that current approaches to urban planning still rely on his same composition dynamics. Landscape may be natural, urban, industrial, etcetera; its importance is crucial in the process of architectural composition, whether on a large or small scale. LC’s writings are a source of instruction on how to directly confront landscape and enhance it through design that is mindful of urban context. An intimate poetic of landscape contemplation arises from his work, as well as a specific positioning of his constructions (and infrastructures) towards the best possible spot for observing the natural and urban context, so that it may pervade his residential buildings and thus be admired. At the same time, LC morphs landscape into a dynamic set for vehicle routes and itineraries, where the point of observation is endlessly shifting.

Several of LC’s ideas continue to live on in the present, namely his principles for the creation of “urban condensers”, various examples of layered functions, and the idea of a diverse typology of roads as a means of improving both a neighbourhood’s outer perception, as well as its living conditions, without forcing discontinuities.

Obiettivo Periferico mira a raccogliere e divulgare l’ampia visione eterogenea che articola il legame tra periferia e quello che viene comunemente identificato come centro cittadino. Per questo IU- VAS e Rotary Club Brunelleschi promuovono la raccolta e la pubblicazione di una collana di es- tratti volti all’analisi di quelle tematiche che, per importanza strategica e operativa, necessitano di essere divulgate ed approfondite dalla comunità scientifica e amministrativa. Professionisti ed es- perti del settore potranno cosi ̀esporre e promuo- vere la propria vision all’interno di un ampio pro- cesso di analisi necessario alla riformulazione di un’idea di periferia contemporanea. L’importanza di poter ri-concepire questi spazi come luoghi identitari, fulcro di una nuova idea di sviluppo progressista e di qualita,̀ è l’obiettivo primario da perseguire per stimolare nuovi investimenti e una loro crescita qualitativa. Il progetto mira ad aprire una visione condivisa su alcune tematiche centrali che arti- coleranno le macro aree di ap- partenenza dei singoli interventi. Cantiere Città: un sistema inclusivo per l’abitare.

Construction Site City: an Inclusive System for Living.

The project for a self-reliant and independent life involves the identification of existing critical issues to be resolved in order to allow ‘inclusive living’, proposing its transformation as an indispensable requirement.
While observing the city, a person is forced to recognize the existence of profound contradictions, not only on the form or techniques of construction of the existing heritage but also on its livability. On one hand the city is perceived as a continuous movement of replacement of activities and parts that overlap and disarrange, on the other hand it seems that the community is more worried about slowing down the “transformation” of the city rather than using it to define the possible future of the urban setting. Therefore, it may seem paradoxical, but there is no clear correlation between the livability of the cities and the degree of transformation that they receive internally.
This contribution anticipates some results of research applied to a part of the urban fabric of the city of Udine proposing - before the critical points to be projectually resolved - the identification of phenomenologies and taxonomies of identifiable technological- architectural transformation and interventions.
The proposed ‘human centered design’ strategy takes into account the study of the urban blocks (from the center to the suburbs) through a “use / function” survey methodology and through the recognition of urban agglomerations that are poten- tially traversable; the aim is to create a general policy system that is coherent not only for the experimentation of accessibility in the civic fabric but - above all - with a particular attention to the spaces of connection and of collective interest because it is “everyone’s resource” (Conti, Tatano, 2018; Lauria, 2017).
The objective is to emphasize that the policy to be adopted - both in the specific study case and as a general example - is a connectivity policy and not just a mobility one.
