Other people have said this in notes, but the Bulwer-Lytton contest involves writing the most absurd opener you can think of and submitting it to the contest. It's not a judgment like the Razzies or the bad sex in books award or something; it's a game. Diana Murtaugh of Baltimore is to be congratulated for this win.

CQL’s funny bc it makes abundantly clear *why* JYL is here but the pacing is so baffling that idk *how* she is there because it’s impossible for either her *or WWX* to be there! WWX wakes up. finds the Burial Mounds deserted. leaves in a panic. goes to Jinlintai and sees JYL keeping vigil alongside Madam Jin. JYL becomes aware of him but he flees. then he is IMMEDIATELY at Nightless City. JYL arrives soon after when the battle is underway. it is nighttime for everything I described from the vigil scene onward with no indication that these are different nights so somehow. SOMEHOW. WWX walked all the way to Jinlintai from Yiling. and then he and JYL both walked all the way from Jinlintai to fucking Qishan that same night without meeting JYL if anything can MORE plausibly be there since’s only traversing the country ONCE and has a sword and a core but WWX somehow traversed the whole length of Fantasy China TWICE with flying not being an option at all however. as stated the whole point of that Jinlintai scene is to establish that she wants to talk to her brother so the WHY is settled!
