See, that’s what the app is perfect for.

Sounds perfect Wahhhh, I don’t wanna

Hey everyone!

I know it’s been a minute, but with the recent news that Automattic has laid off a portion of its workforce (including a sizable percent of tumblr’s staff), it’s a good time to have a quick chat about the future.

Now, as far as we know, tumblr isn’t going anywhere just yet. No need to panic! However, I do recommend that you take into consideration a few things.

1: Backup your tumblr! Here’s tumblr’s official guide to doing so. It’s always a good idea to have backups of your data and now is a great time to do so.

*I’ll also be including a handful of other links walking you guys through other backup methods at the end of this post. As I understand it, each of them have different pros and cons, and it might be a good idea to have more than one type of backup depending on what you want to save/how you’d like the backup to look/etc.

2: Have some place your mutuals/friends can find you! A carrd or linktree is a great way to list off anywhere you might find yourself on the internet.

3: Once again, don’t panic! We don’t know that anything is happening to tumblr anytime soon—it just doesn’t hurt to have a backup. Better to have a plan now instead of being blindsided later.

*The other backup methods I’ve been able to find:

—First off, someone put together a document with several backup methods & pros and cons for each. (I believe it originated from a tumblr post, but with search being the way it is I haven’t been able to track it down.) This goes over a lot, but I’m adding a few more links to this post in case they might be helpful too.

This post and this video were a good guide to the older “bbolli tumblr-utils backup for beginners” method mentioned in the doc (I used them during the ban in 2018 to make sure I had my main blog saved).

—I’ve also found a handful of python & python 3 tumblr backup tutorial videos out there, in case those would be helpful for you. (I haven’t personally tried these methods out yet, but the videos seem to go over the updated version of tumblr-utils.

(Reblogging to add something I initially just had in the tags—

To be clear: It's not worth being worried about yet. We have no details. But this does look like something Aunt Triple P would've kept an eye on, so that's what I'll do. The askbox is open if you guys hear more in the meantime.)

I know it’s been a little while, but I’m back with an update on this: Tumblr is increasing the price of its yearly ad-free/premium subscription from $39.99 to $69.99 starting from whenever your yearly renewal date happens to be.

(I first heard about it when this post crossed my main dash—though I think the date mentioned in the post may not apply to everyone. Based on the help documentation, it seems like the date is a case-by-case basis sort of thing.)

A quick rundown on Premium and everything it entails—

Back in July, Staff announced that the ad-free option was becoming Tumblr Premium. (Apologies for not covering that when it happened, by the way; life got pretty hectic.)

According to the official help documentation, this means there’s now a slew of perks bundled with ad-free: one free Blaze and TumblrMart item per month, early access to new features, and higher limits on posts and video lengths.

If these things don’t sound like something you’re interested in, it’s important to note that there’s not a plain ad-free tier anymore; the bundle is non-optional and seems to be the cause of the price increase.

TL;DR: The yearly ad-free is option is about to see a huge price increase since it’s now part of a bundle.

🌟 New

  • We’ve just launched Blaze Pro, a self-serve and stand-alone advertising platform for Tumblr!
  • The unified Blaze dashboard from the web has now joined the apps! First, make sure your app is up to date, then visit your blog (tap the snowman icon at the bottom-right), and tap the flame icon near the top.
  • To avoid confusion with Communities, Community Labels are now Content Labels, and Community Guidelines are now User Guidelines.
  • Also, the Community category of the support form has been re-assigned to Communities. Please feel free to use that for any questions, concerns, comments, or bugs regarding Communities.
  • We’ve added Community Invitation push notifications to our mobile apps! When someone with push notifications enabled in the latest app is invited to a Community, they will now receive a push notification instead of a message from Tumblrbot.
  • We’ve added “This ad has autoplaying audio” to the available reasons when reporting an ad!

🛠 Fixed

  • An update for the Android app to stop ads with autoplaying audio is rolling out, so please update as soon as it’s available for you!
  • You can once again navigate between images in a photoset from the lightbox when viewing a blog page directly, such as staff.tumblr.com.
  • For a brief time yesterday, queued and scheduled posts were not posting. This has now been fixed, and everything that should have been posted was eventually posted. If not, please check your drafts!

🚧 Ongoing

  • No ongoing incidents to speak of right now.

🌱 Upcoming

  • No upcoming launches to announce today.

Experiencing an issue? Check for Known Issues and file a Support Request if you have something new. We’ll get back to you as soon as we can!

I know I’m a week or so late to the party again—but here’s a reminder to be careful what exactly you monetize!

image

This right here? Not advisable at all—as Aunt Triple P has talked about before, if The Mouse (or another corporation) decides to take legal action against you for making money off of their IP, you’re on your own.

Plenty of people take commissions, but (and I know I’ve said this before) this is also the reason AO3 won’t let you directly state “hey, you can pay me to write fanfic for you” or link to a payment platform—it can lead to major legal trouble.

Be very, very careful with what you’re publicly monetizing.

TL;DR: Fanworks only fall under “fair use” as long as you’re not making any money off of them—so having someone pay to access fic or art posts could land you in a lot of legal trouble if the copyright holder decided to come after you.

Tipping is going away on June 1, 2024

Hello, Tumblr! (And a special hello to our Tippers <3)

We introduced Tipping back in February 2022 in response to your feedback, and it’s been a great addition to many communities on Tumblr. We do love to launch features that bring you joy, and Tipping was a part of that effort.

Unfortunately, Tipping hasn’t seen the usage we’d hoped for. So, in order to focus on the things that really make Tumblr Tumblr for most users, we’re shutting Tipping down on June 1.

Have you tipped someone in the past, or is Tipping enabled on your blog? You don’t need to do anything; the little Tipping icon will automatically disappear from blogs or posts with the feature enabled, and you’ll no longer be able to Tip creators or receive Tips. Any money you have received from Tipping will be paid out to the account you registered with via Stripe by June 15.

While this will affect a very small number of you, we know that those of you who do Tip do so with great admiration for your Tumblr peers, and we’re sorry to be taking this away from you. We hope you can find other ways to show your affection and gratitude for your fellow users: You could gift someone a badge you think they’ll love or Blaze the post you’d otherwise have Tipped, and that will surely make someone’s day.

Please contact Support if you have any questions about this change. Thank you, as always, for coming on this journey with us!

I’m about a week late to the news, but—

Holy hell, it finally happened. (For anyone wondering why it didn’t get much use in the first place, our dear Aunt Triple P made a few posts back in the day RE: the legal issues monetizing fan content can pose—some of these are about Post+, but the tip jar had many of the same inherent problems.)

TL;DR: Fanworks only fall under “fair use” as long as you’re not making any money off of them—so having someone tip you on fic or art posts could land you in a lot of legal trouble if the copyright holder decided to come after you.

this is also why ao3 won’t let you link to things like ko-fi: it can get you sued tip jar doc rambles

i enjoyed The Boopening (as did OP) but this definitely needs to be said saw this last night and immediately thought of aunt triple p...and then lost track of where i found it on my main dash 🤦‍♀️ at least duckduckgo came through for me ah well. better late than never!

Anonymous asked:

It's heartening to know that there are folk like you and Aunt Triple P willing to take a stand. Gonna miss Aunt TP. This site is barely holding together as it is. Thank you for caring and doing what you do.

Thanks for taking over, Doc.

Thank you for being so kind! I promise I’ll try my best for all of you.

thank you so much! this is so sweet anon ask (side note: the inbox says there are two asks but I'm only counting one; if anyone sent another I think it's been eaten)

An (hopefully not too awkward) introduction

Hey there everyone! I’m the person our dear Aunt Triple P left the keys with. In keeping with the regeneration theme, you might as well call me Doc. (She/her)

I have no intention of replacing her, (Steph did so much for us, I don’t think I could ever completely fill her shoes) but I do think this blog is both an important piece of tumblr history and a very useful reference point for a lot of things. I’ve taken over management because I think it’s worth preserving—this way, no links to this blog or its posts will break.

I can’t promise more protests, but I promise I’ll maintain this place as best I can—and I’ll keep an eye on things from my main account, but please do feel free to @ this one if any new “Staff implemented a new thing, here’s the lowdown” stuff comes up. I’ll check in periodically.

Happy to keep this place going,

—Doc
