Jacob, the Duke's private secretary is in love with Bertha, and in order to get Walter out of the way, he induces the duke to send him to Mexico to look after his interests there. Scarcely had Walter taken his departure when Jacob tries to make love to his wife. His advances are repulsed however, and in a rage, he vows he will have revenge. His opportunity comes sooner than he expects. The duchess is holding a drawing-room and among those present is Count Wassali, with whom she is secretly in love. Bertha sees them leave the palace together, ostensibly for a walk on the grounds. She is aware that Jacob is also watching them, and seeing him go at once to the duke with die information concerning his wife, she hurries after the duchess and has just time to take her place in the arms of the Count when the duke and Jacob appear on the scene. Botha's clever ruse causing Jacob to again lose out only increases his desire for vengeance and he spreads the news of Bertha's supposed perfidy among the guests. A cable is also sent to Walter advising him of his wife's unfaithfulness, and unknown to her, he returns to Europe, and, taking their child, he places her in a convent and leaves a note for Bertha, saying that she will never see either the child or himself again. Bertha is heartbroken, and being innocent, though not in a position to clear herself, feels the blow more keenly. Walter now seeks Count Wassali and challenges him to a duel. Just before the time appointed for the duel, the count sends a note to the duchess. She immediately starts for the place designated for the duel and arrives only in time to find the count fatally wounded. She is not too late however, to tell Walter of his wife's devotion to herself and how Bertha sacrificed her own honor to save hers. Walter, on hearing the duchess' story, takes his child from the convent and in company with the duchess returns to Bertha. There is a very happy reconciliation, and peace is restored once more between Walter and the Maid of Honor. Written by Press Sheet from Library of Congress See less
