Black Hollyhock (Althaea rosa) is an old cottage garden favorite with near black flowers. Spikes 6-8 feet tall rise from this biennial heirloom, the second year, and erupt with dramatic blooms, that will gently reseed if allowed. Black Hollyhock requires poor soil in full sun area to do well and be low-maintenance. In my yard, deer seem to avoid the fuzzy leaves but eat the top of the stalks, just before they bloom, if left unguarded.
