EL CAMINO REAL DE TIERRA ADENTRO: was the trade route between Mexico City & San Juan Pueblo, New Mexico, from 1598-1882. Its building was triggered by the discovery of a rich silver mine in Zacatecas. The route had been used for trade among native tribes since the earliest of times. As an official "royal road", it helped the Spanish conquistadors spread Christianity throughout occupied lands. The trail was used until the railroad replaced the need for wagons.
