Tell your children to think of the < symbol as a Pac-Man’s mouth, with its jaws open wide. The Pac-Man is very hungry and always wants to eat as many ghosts as it can find! Its open jaws always point towards the biggest amount. Older children who are confident at recognising digits and understanding place value can draw the numbers inside the little ghosts while younger children benefit from seeing real amounts so you might use loose parta such as pipe cleaners , buttons or counters.

Use teddy bear counters to teach number comparison! Laminate the number comparison work mat without signs (see previous pin). Arrange bears in 3 sets of 2 groups each: one equal set, one less than set, and one greater than set. Give your child a dry-erase marker and have her label each set with the correct sign. To add an element of surprise, place cups over the piles. Tell child that the bears are sleeping in their caves; we are going to wake them up to see which neighbor family has more cubs!
