I want to introduce you to a graceful evergreen conifer that you might not be familiar with, but deserves more use in our east Texas landscapes. Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) is a handsome evergreen tree, with short, dark to medium green needles clothing short shoots. The stems and branches are graceful, with a slight bending or drooping habit.

Cryptomeria japonica 'Little Champion' (Japanese Cedar) A mid-size dense, compact evergreen conifer with rounded branches. Bright green needles in Spring that turn emerald green throughout the growing season with a purplish-bronze through the Winter. Slow-growing with a cushion-like rounded habit. Pruning is not necessary but if needed prune early Spring after threat of all frost. Grows best in moist, well-drained soil in sheltered areas. Ideal as a container, patio, or foundation plant.
