Kiln wash is a mixture of alumina hydrate, kaolin and sometimes other ingredients depending on firing schedules and its sole purpose is to act as a barrier between your kiln shelf and the ceramics that sit on top of it.

Mixed with water to a "skim milk" consistency (I used a 50/50 ratio of powder to water), it needs to be applied to your shelves in 2-3 coats with time to dry in between each coat, and I read that spraying the shelf with water means you achieve a more even coat as the wash isn't absorbed too quickly when it comes into contact with the porous shelf.
