The Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) is the smallest of the eight species of pelican, although it is a large bird in nearly every other regard. It is 106–137 cm (42–54 in) in length, weighs from 2.75 to 5.5 kg (6-12 lb) and has a wingspan from 1.83 to 2.5 m (6 to 8.2 ft). Big Gulp is a unique representation of a pelican with a fish in his craw. In designing this piece, I used many repeating lines and curves. There are parallel shapes within the pelican, the fish and the barnacles, and the pelican seems to morph into the pier he is perched on.

Immature Brown Pelican Sebastian Inlet State Park Brown Pelicans are very common Florida birds, found here year round, frequenting the coastal waterways. Sebastian Inlet State Park is one of my favorite local spots to observe the pelicans. The inlets is highly frequented by fishermen and pelicans are always trying to befriend them.
