Vintage embroidery Phulkari Bagh wedding shawl. Reverse embroidered in silk floss on a hand-spun cotton base. Phulkari can literally be translated as: phul (meaning flower) and kari (work). Historically made in the region of Punjab, northern India. Baghs translates as 'gardens' and are the most prestigious of this type of shawl. They were held above the head of a girl by maternal uncles as she made her way to the marriage (mandap). It was a symbol of status, honour and prestige.
