Abstract self portraits inspired by @tadcarpenter's cover art for Wonder. Fifth graders drew their face and hair. Traced with bold lines and colored the hair in like a silhouette. They spent two Class days exploring three different paint materials/techniques, and creating word lists and practice word clouds They explored @kwikstixpaint, #jackricheson neon tempera cakes, and wet-on-wet liquid watercolors with salt. They selected their own technique and design and painted their faces and ears. There are so many ways to teach Picasso portraits, I'm working with 3rd grade so I wanted to keep it simple. I'll show them some of Picasso's Portraits and then go into the project - demonstrating each step. I'm going to ask them to create diagonal folds, not even folds that create squares on their page, but more random folds.
