John Blackthorne, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Japanese History, Kyushu, Japanese Names, Trading Post, The English, Southeast Asia, Japanese Art

Taken in Hirado, Kyushu. This is a statue of William Adams, the first Englishman to arrive in Japan, as the navigator aboard the Dutch ship Liefde in 1600. Adams became a retainer of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and took the Japanese name Miura Anjin. He later helped establish the English trading post in Hirado, Kyushu and led trade expeditions to Southeast Asia. Adams served as the basis of the character John Blackthorne in James Clavell's novel, "Shogun".
