Of all the world’s marine mammals, few are as majestic and powerful as the large cetaceans that we call whales. They can grow to exceptional lengths, dive to the depths of the ocean, and swim for thousands of miles! In this article, we’re going to introduce you to 21 of the most wonderful types of whales. From the massive blue whale to the elusive Omura’s whale, here’s everything you’ve ever wanted to know about these amazing seafaring animals.

Baleen Whales are among the largest whales in the ocean, and some of the largest animals on Earth. They belong to a suborder of whales (also known as cetaceans) called Mysticeti. Mysticeti whales have a bony plate in their upper jaw in which fibrous strands called baleen hang down from. Baleen is made of keratin, the same material that makes up our hair and fingernails. Mysticeti whales use their baleen to strain the water from the ocean to capture the prey it feeds on.
