📚 BIG Books 📚 - Alice Springs, NT Outside the entrance to the Alice Springs Public Library is a set of Big Books. All eight of the giant books are by the author Neville Shute, who wrote the book A Town Like Alice, which was later adapted into a film. The locals weren’t too pleased about having the spines of books by an author who wrote about a town ‘like’ Alice, but not actually about Alice Springs itself. Rightfully so.

Dwellingup is a real diamond and only 90 minutes (108 km) south of Perth, WA. This pet-friendly and child-friendly little town is full of wonder and awe. Within driving distance is Lane Poole Reserve, which should be on your things to do in Dwellingup itinerary. Train buffs should add the Hotham Railway Experience to their list, then take a stroll through the Forest Discovery Centre. Dwellingup makes a great base to enjoy the surrounding areas including day trips to Mandurah, Pinjarra (be sure to stop at the lolly shop, you won’t regret it) and Collie, home to the Black Diamond Lake. Newcastle turned out to be a bustling sea-side city with a seemingly endless amount of things to explore. With so many things to do in Newcastle, such as Caves Beach, the Bogey Hole, multiple Ocean Baths and Shipwreck Walk, we were contentedly exhausted by the end of our stay. We had decided that we’d spend a good 5 days exploring all that we could in Newcastle and we were not disappointed. Our main expenses were accommodation (there are no free or low-cost camps in Newcastle) and fuel as we stayed 40 minutes out of town at Swansea. Exploring Sawn Rocks, Narrabri NSW was really something else. We felt like tiny creatures walking around the bottom of what felt like a giants world. Hidden in the Mount Kaputar National Park is the mind-blowing rock formation, infamously known as Sawn Rocks, Narrabri NSW. We were in absolute awe at this natural phenomenon as we walked around the base of the rock face amongst the giant broken pieces. Many people compare the structure to organ piping because it really does look like a massive wall of giant organ pipes. But I likened the broken pieces on the ground to humungous bits of honeycomb. Accessing Sawn Rocks is a via a 30-minute drive from Narrabri or a 50-minute drive from Bingara in rural New South Wales, Australia. 🏕️ >PIN IT For Later<

The private property is a 6600 acre working Merino Sheep Station for wool production, trade lamb sales and dryland cropping. The Queensland Outback hub of Winton is located between Longreach and Mount Isa. There are plenty of things to do in Winton to keep you busy for a few days while you’re visiting. Some of them are free, including the Musical Fence and Arno’s Wall. The largest tourist attractions around Winton are the Waltzing Matilda Centre and two pieces of Australia’s Dinosaur Trail – the ‘Age of Dinosaurs’ and the ‘Dinosaur Stampede.’ You’ll be kept busy exploring all that Winton has to offer in Outback QLD. We primarily stopped in Winton to do the Australian Age of Dinosaurs, but were surprised to find much more than a Museum on offer! >PIN IT For Later<

About 60km north of Hughenden, is the spectacular Porcupine Gorge National Park. This natural phenomenon features levels of sedimentary rock spanning over hundreds of millions of years. Some even call Porcupine Gorge the “mini Grand Canyon of Australia.” The walk down isn’t too strenuous, although it is very steep, so coming back up will take a lot more out of you. Be sure to pack lunch, hat, water and swimmers so you can get the most out of your walk down into Porcupine Gorge. There is camping onsite with a toilet. >PIN IT For Later<

Walkabout Creek Hotel is a little pub in north-west Queensland, which was put on the map by a big blockbuster movie, Crocodile Dundee in 1986. You can see the bar from the movie set, which is in the back shed and even hold ‘the knife’ if you ask the bar staff. These days the Walkabout Creek Hotel is located on the main street going through the town of McKinlay, although it originally sat round the corner on a side street. Make sure you stop in for some lunch and a drink on your way through. >PIN IT For Later<

The Long Waterhole is a great free camping spot in Winton. There is enough room for about 30 footballs teams (it’s huge!) with lots of prime, waterfront campsites. Some spots around the waterhole offer nice trees to camp by. There are no amenities on-site, so be sure to be fully self-contained. Just a few minutes drive up into town will find you at the RV dump point and potable water tap. About 30km north-west of Longreach, heading towards Winton, is the Darr River, which has a great Free Camping area. We scored a great spot right on the river with our own private little jetty down the bottom, so it seemed the perfect spot to chill out for a few days and catch up on things. Rectangular containers are a fantastic caravan storage idea for the pantry. They seem to be the easiest way to store kitchen ingredients and snacks. Mixing and matching both square and rectangular sizes means you can get the most out of your pantry space. There are heaps of brands around these days that sell these types of containers (such as Tupperware). Mine slot into an overhead cupboard quite well.
