I can’t really read Chinese, I read everything via Google Translate and mainly used it to translate the dialogue for this comic. I’m also not a translator so I couldn’t think of a clever way to translate the last two lines.
“Can’t I be more than just your lifeline?” is directly from google’s interpretation. Per the author’s notes, the original line from Ogata is based on a proverb/saying that “A drowning man will grasp at straws.” Ogata references this type of straw and when Sugimoto understands, he says “Who would compare themself to straw?”
Ogata’s line is still very impactful when translated into English, but I couldn’t think of a way to keep the sweetness in Sugimoto’s response. I ultimately went with “Who would compare themself to a line?” which is both less impactful and doesn’t make much sense from an English culture POV (I can’t imagine anyone saying this), but I thought it was better than trying to talk about straws and losing the impact of Ogata’s line instead.
found a twitter tweet that was like “oh yeah content warning hatoful boyfriend has a lot of gore and violence” and every single person in the notes/retweets/qrts/whatever the fuck terms twitter has was going “WHAT THE FUCK IT HAS WHAT” and i find that hilarious because. large amounts of gore and violence is a tremendous understatement about the amount of stuff that goes down in hatoful boyfriend
