im going to be real rn i completely understand where hamlet is coming from because if my dad died and then my mom married his brother a MONTH AFTER HIS FUNERAL and THEN everyone told me to just get over it already because everybody dies and THEN i talked to my dad's ghost and tried to get some semblance of closure after his death and he told me "cut the bullshit im burning my sins off in hell rn but its not a big deal listen up your uncle murdered me you gotta get revenge for me" i would also do an acrobatic fucking pirouette backwards off the handle
so tonight my brother and i put our heads together re: our respective areas of expertise
Per something @butchhamlet was saying on his blog about how Hamlet doesn’t necessarily need to be a teenager but needs to be treated like one (because of how much conflict is created by the infantilization of him in order to maintain his social role as ‘son of a king’ and keep people from thinking that maybe he should be the king)…
…I think that is a really good argument in favor of physically-disabled Hamlet. Much of that kind of infantilization later on can be explained by how mental illness is treated (alternately dangerous and childish, depending), but he’s treated like that well before his madness-related plans start and visibly-disabled adults getting treated like children (or getting ‘help’ they don’t want/need without asking for it) is soooo pervasive, it could make for a really compelling performance choice (because of course much as people joke about him being a hot mess, it is one of THE most respected roles in the English theatrical canon and the audience takes Hamlet very seriously even if the other characters often don’t).
Brecht talking about his love of Shakespeare and referencing Mao at the same time is so real of him
"and let him ply his music" is such a funny line. i know laertes has a soundcloud with 3 followers
hey.
[image description: two sections of text from shakespeare's Hamlet. the first reads:
BARNARDO
How now, Horatio, you tremble and look pale.
Is not this something more than fantasy?
What think you on ’t?
"you tremble and look pale" is underlined in blue. the second reads:
HAMLET
Heaven make thee free of it. I follow thee.—
I am dead, Horatio.—Wretched queen, adieu.—
You that look pale and tremble at this chance,
That are but mutes or audience to this act,
Had I but time (as this fell sergeant, Death,
Is strict in his arrest), O, I could tell you—
But let it be.—Horatio, I am dead.
Thou livest; report me and my cause aright
To the unsatisfied.
"you that look pale and tremble at this chance" is underlined in blue. end description]
“Saint Valentine is past. Lovers, to bed; ‘tis almost fairy time.”
— William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream
this is the opposite of a new observation but hamlet's uncle really is such a bitch. if i were grieving someone i had complex and intense feelings about and someone told me, IN PUBLIC IN AN ASSEMBLY OF MY FAMILY AND THE GOVERNMENT AND ALSO IN FRONT OF MY MOM, WHO THEN JOINS IN, to get over it already because uwu well everybody dies </3 i would have started throwing hands in the throne room. claudius didn't even like take him aside. he gave this lecture in front of god and everyone. we undersell hamlet's self-control
like yeah no sorry your majesty my uncle i would actually love to stop being sad and suicidal all the time, like, maybe if i had something else to focus on, like, i dunno, like if i were in school or something, but, you know, haha, for SOME REASON i'm not in school right now, almost like SOMEBODY told me not to go back to my life and to keep stewing in the pit of grief, how funny is that, lol,
you will never catch me saying hamlet did nothing wrong. hamlet did a lot of things wrong. but claudius deserved every ounce of finely aged haterism hamlet threw his way
